What's Happening?
Polish video game company CD Projekt has officially changed its name to CD Projekt Red. This decision was made during the company's general meeting on June 23, as reported by local finance outlet Bankier.pl. The rebranding aims to unify the company's name with
that of its well-known studio, CD Projekt Red, which is responsible for developing popular games such as The Witcher series. The management believes that this change will ensure consistency in brand communication and facilitate global market identification. CD Projekt was originally founded in 1994 as a distributor of foreign video games in Poland and later established the CD Projekt Red studio in 2002 to develop games based on The Witcher book series. The company has also sold its GOG storefront to one of its founders, Michał Kiciński, for $25 million at the end of 2025.
Why It's Important?
The rebranding of CD Projekt to CD Projekt Red is significant as it reflects the company's strategic focus on its core operational activities, which include producing and publishing video games. This move is expected to strengthen the brand's global presence and align the company's identity with its most successful studio. The decision to sell the GOG storefront indicates a shift in strategy, allowing CD Projekt to concentrate on game development and brand management. This could potentially lead to increased investment in new projects and innovation within the gaming industry. The rebranding also highlights the importance of brand consistency in maintaining a competitive edge in the global market.
What's Next?
CD Projekt Red is currently working on several high-profile projects, including The Witcher 4 and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The company's Boston office is handling the development of the Cyberpunk sequel, while a multiplayer game set in The Witcher universe, codenamed Project Sirius, is also in the works. Additionally, CD Projekt Red is developing its first original IP, Project Hadar. These projects are expected to further solidify the company's position in the gaming industry and attract a broader audience. The rebranding may also lead to new marketing strategies and partnerships to enhance the company's global reach.
