What's Happening?
The International Accounting Standards Board’s (IASB) Global Preparers Forum (GPF) has announced the appointment of four new members, each serving an initial five-year term. These new members are Cristina Fortunati, Senior Director, IFRS and CSRD Reporting
at Davide Campari-Milano N.V. (Italy); Hanjong Yoo, Executive Vice President and Head of the Corporate Accounting Group at Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (South Korea); João Costa Santos, Accounting Policy Lead—Accounting, Regulatory and Valuation Policy at NatWest Group plc (UK); and Toby Odell, Head of Group Technical Accounting and Sustainability Finance at International Airlines Group (UK). Their inclusion aims to broaden the geographical and industry perspectives informing the IASB's work. The GPF operates independently from the IASB and the IFRS Foundation, focusing on gathering input from the international community of financial statement preparers. Members are selected based on their professional competence and practical experience in financial reporting, contributing to the development of high-quality IFRS Accounting Standards.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the Global Preparers Forum with diverse international members is crucial for ensuring that International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) remain globally relevant and practical for a wide array of industries and regions. By incorporating insights from preparers in Italy, South Korea, and the UK, the IASB can better understand the real-world implications of its standards across different economic landscapes and regulatory environments. This move helps to refine IFRS Accounting Standards, making them more robust and applicable for multinational corporations, including those with significant U.S. operations or investments. Improved standards can lead to greater transparency and comparability in financial reporting worldwide, which benefits U.S. investors, businesses, and regulatory bodies by providing clearer financial data for decision-making and reducing the complexities associated with cross-border financial analysis. The enhanced input from preparers also helps to mitigate potential implementation challenges, fostering smoother adoption of new standards.
What's Next?
The newly appointed members will begin their five-year terms, contributing their expertise to the GPF's ongoing discussions and feedback processes for the IASB. Their diverse backgrounds are expected to influence future deliberations on IFRS Accounting Standards, potentially leading to more nuanced and globally applicable accounting principles. The GPF will continue to serve as a vital conduit for practical insights from financial statement preparers, ensuring that the IASB's standard-setting activities are informed by real-world operational considerations. This continuous feedback loop is essential for the evolution of IFRS, which aims to provide a common global language for financial reporting. Future IASB meetings and publications, such as the October 2026 update and podcast, will likely reflect the impact of these expanded perspectives on various accounting topics, including risk mitigation accounting.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of new members to the Global Preparers Forum underscores a broader trend towards greater international collaboration and inclusivity in global financial standard-setting. This move reflects an acknowledgment that effective accounting standards must be informed by a wide range of perspectives to address the complexities of a globalized economy. The emphasis on geographical and industry diversity highlights the IASB's commitment to developing standards that are not only technically sound but also practically implementable across different legal, economic, and cultural contexts. This approach helps to foster trust in financial reporting across borders, which is fundamental for international trade, investment, and capital markets. The GPF's role in bridging the gap between standard-setters and practitioners is critical for the ongoing relevance and acceptance of IFRS as a global benchmark for financial transparency and accountability.
