What's Happening?
The Equipment Leasing & Finance Association (ELFA) Board of Directors has named James Cress as Acting President & CEO. This appointment follows the announcement that current President & CEO Leigh Lytle will conclude her tenure later this year. Cress,
who previously served as ELFA's Immediate Past Chair from 2024-2025, brings over 30 years of experience in banking and equipment finance to this interim role. His background includes nearly two decades at Stryker, where he was Vice President and General Manager of Flex Financial, the company's captive finance business. Before Stryker, Cress worked with National City Commercial Capital and U.S. Bank in commercial banking. His extensive involvement with ELFA spans over two decades, including leadership positions on the Board of Directors, LeasePAC, and the Captive and Vendor Finance Business Council Steering Committee, as well as contributions to the association's advocacy and emerging-talent initiatives.
Why It's Important?
This leadership transition at ELFA is significant for the $1.3 trillion U.S. equipment finance sector. ELFA represents over 600 member companies that provide crucial financing for businesses to acquire necessary equipment, directly impacting U.S. economic growth, manufacturing, and job creation. James Cress's appointment as Acting President & CEO ensures continuity during this critical period. His deep industry knowledge and long-standing involvement with ELFA mean that the association's strategic priorities, including advocacy and support for its members, are expected to remain on track. The stability provided by an experienced interim leader like Cress is vital for maintaining confidence within the equipment finance community and for ensuring that the sector continues to contribute effectively to the broader U.S. economy.
What's Next?
James Cress will work closely with ELFA’s senior leadership team and staff to maintain continuity in the association's operations and to ensure the continued execution of its strategic priorities. His immediate focus will be on supporting ELFA personnel, preserving operational stability, and ensuring that the association continues to deliver high-level services to its members. Concurrently, the ELFA Board of Directors will conduct a search for a permanent President & CEO. The outcome of this search will determine the long-term leadership and strategic direction of ELFA, which will, in turn, influence the future landscape of the U.S. equipment finance industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The transition highlights the importance of strong leadership and institutional knowledge within industry associations, especially those representing a sector as vital as equipment finance. The ELFA's role extends beyond its members to influencing policy and fostering an environment conducive to business growth. The selection of an internal, highly experienced figure like Cress for the acting role underscores a commitment to stability and leveraging existing expertise during periods of change. This approach can mitigate potential disruptions and reinforce the association's credibility and effectiveness in advocating for the industry's interests, ensuring that the sector's voice remains strong in economic and regulatory discussions.
