What's Happening?
Jazz Pharmaceuticals has entered into a significant collaboration with AbCellera to develop next-generation T cell engagers aimed at treating hard-to-treat cancers. The deal involves an upfront payment of $56 million to AbCellera, with the potential for
up to $2.46 billion in total payments, contingent on the success of the programs. The partnership will leverage AbCellera's multispecific T cell engager platform to create candidates for gastrointestinal cancers and other solid tumors. AbCellera will conduct discovery and early-stage research for two initial programs, with a third program planned for the following year. Jazz Pharmaceuticals will have the option to acquire exclusive rights to the candidates, which could result in AbCellera receiving up to $792 million in milestone payments per program, along with tiered royalties.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is a strategic move for Jazz Pharmaceuticals as it seeks to diversify and strengthen its oncology portfolio, particularly in gastrointestinal cancers. The partnership with AbCellera aligns with Jazz's focus on rare diseases and expands its capabilities in developing innovative cancer treatments. The deal underscores Jazz's commitment to advancing its oncology strategy following recent challenges, such as the failure of its drug Zepzelca in a Phase 3 trial for small cell lung cancer. By accessing AbCellera's advanced T cell engager platform, Jazz aims to develop potentially best-in-class multispecific antibodies, which could significantly impact the treatment landscape for GI cancers and other solid tumors.
What's Next?
Jazz Pharmaceuticals and AbCellera will proceed with the discovery and early-stage research for the initial programs, with the possibility of expanding the collaboration to include additional programs. The success of these programs could lead to significant milestone payments and royalties for AbCellera. Jazz is also awaiting an FDA decision on its bispecific HER2-directed antibody, Ziihera, for a label expansion in gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, expected by August 25. The outcome of these developments will be crucial in shaping Jazz's future in the oncology sector.
