What's Happening?
Ava Lombardo, a local Girl Scout, organized a self-defense workshop as part of her Gold Award project. The workshop, held at Newtown High School, aimed to teach high school and college students, as well as young adults, self-defense techniques to enhance
personal safety. The event featured Caroline Degon, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, who instructed participants on various defensive strategies. The workshop also included surveys to assess participants' confidence in self-defense before and after the session. Lombardo's project is part of her efforts to address community safety and empower individuals with practical skills.
Why It's Important?
The self-defense workshop organized by Ava Lombardo underscores the importance of personal safety education, particularly for young adults. By equipping participants with self-defense skills, the workshop aims to increase their confidence and ability to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations. This initiative is particularly relevant in light of statistics indicating high rates of campus sexual violence. Lombardo's project also highlights the role of community-driven efforts in addressing safety concerns and fostering empowerment. The workshop's success may inspire similar initiatives, contributing to a broader culture of safety and awareness.
