Smoltek Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB, and Heraeus Precious Metals have announced a strategic collaboration to develop next-generation ultra-low iridium Porous Transport Electrodes (PTEs) for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water
electrolysis. This partnership aims to address the high cost of iridium, a critical component in PEM electrolysis, by significantly reducing its consumption while maintaining high catalytic activity and conductivity. The companies are set to begin a 3,000-hour long-term durability test this autumn to evaluate the operational stability of Smoltek’s proprietary nanostructured iridium catalyst layer. This testing phase is crucial for transitioning the technology from laboratory research to industrial application, marking a significant step toward the commercialization and large-scale industrialization of cost-effective green hydrogen production.
