The Southeast Produce Council (SEPC) has released its sixth annual 'What’s New? 2026' consumer research, highlighting significant shifts in the retail produce market. The study, presented by Anne-Marie Roerink of 210 Analytics at Southern Innovations,
indicates that U.S. consumers are recalibrating their fruit and vegetable purchases due to financial pressures, the increasing use of GLP-1 medications, and a demographic shift towards younger consumers. Key findings show that 18.1% of U.S. consumers currently use GLP-1 medications, particularly higher-income individuals aged 29 to 50 in urban and suburban areas, leading to more deliberate food choices and increased consumption of fresh produce. Additionally, Millennials are projected to surpass Boomers in produce spending within two years, bringing new shopping and preparation habits. Artificial intelligence is also playing a growing role, with 82% of produce consumers regularly using at least one AI platform for food-related information, meal planning, and shopping. The study emphasizes that while fresh produce remains important, consumers are seeking solutions that integrate produce effortlessly into their daily routines, whether for budget, health, or convenience.
