What's Happening?
Newmont Exploration, in partnership with Koonenberry Gold, has commenced a diamond drilling program at the Allawah prospect within the Junee Joint Venture Project in New South Wales. This initiative is fully funded by Newmont under a 2018 exploration
and farm-in agreement. The program aims to cover up to nine holes spanning 1,800 meters. Previous reverse circulation drilling at the site revealed promising gold intercepts, including 20 meters at 1.15 grams per tonne gold from 54 meters. The current drilling seeks to explore the mineralization strike extent within the largest gold-in-soil anomaly at the project, which measures over 1.5 kilometers by 1 kilometer. This marks the first drilling at Allawah since a dipole-dipole induced polarization geophysical survey identified significant resistivity and chargeability features. Koonenberry Gold holds a 20% interest in the joint venture, with Newmont managing operations.
Why It's Important?
The commencement of drilling at the Allawah prospect is significant for both Newmont and Koonenberry Gold as it represents a strategic step in exploring and potentially expanding gold resources in New South Wales. The results of this drilling could have substantial implications for the companies involved, potentially leading to increased gold production and financial gains. For Newmont, this project aligns with its broader strategy to enhance its gold exploration and production capabilities. The success of this venture could also bolster investor confidence and attract further investment into the region's mining sector. Additionally, the project could contribute to local economic development through job creation and increased economic activity.
What's Next?
Results from the current drilling program at Allawah are expected in the third to fourth quarter of 2026. Newmont is also reviewing additional targets across the joint venture for potential aircore and diamond drill testing. The outcomes of these explorations will likely influence future operational decisions and investment strategies. Stakeholders, including investors and local communities, will be closely monitoring the results to assess the project's viability and potential economic benefits. The success of this drilling program could lead to further exploration and development activities in the region.
