What's Happening?
ADNOC is advancing its Diyab unconventional gas play by applying lessons from U.S. shale development, as discussed at URTeC 2026. The company is integrating seismic, reservoir, and operational data to optimize well spacing and improve landing point selection.
The Turnwell joint venture, formed by ADNOC Drilling, SLB, and Patterson-UTI, has drilled 125 wells and completed 85 since its launch in 2024. The venture aims to accelerate the development of the UAE's unconventional resources by combining local capabilities with U.S. expertise. Key focuses include adapting high-density completions and addressing water management challenges in the desert environment. The project has achieved significant cost reductions by transitioning to sand-based completions and simplifying frac chemistry.
Why It's Important?
ADNOC's approach to leveraging U.S. shale techniques for its Diyab project highlights the global influence of American unconventional resource development practices. By integrating these methods, ADNOC aims to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs, potentially setting a new standard for unconventional gas development in the Middle East. The project's success could encourage other regions to adopt similar strategies, impacting global energy markets. The focus on water management in a desert environment also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in resource extraction, which could influence future regulatory and environmental policies.
What's Next?
As ADNOC continues to develop the Diyab play, the focus will shift towards optimizing development through fracture diagnostics and well-spacing evaluations. The project is expected to transition towards multi-well pad development, which could further enhance efficiency and reduce costs. The success of this project may lead to increased investment in unconventional resources in the UAE and potentially influence other countries to adopt similar strategies. Continued advancements in technology and operational practices will be crucial for maximizing the long-term potential of the Diyab play.
