What's Happening?
United Airlines has introduced a new mobile app feature that allows passengers to pre-order food, drinks, and other travel essentials before their flights. This service is currently being piloted at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), specifically
at up to nine designated gates in Terminal C. Customers receive a push notification via the app or email prior to departure, enabling them to select items such as sandwiches, salads, beverages, kids' meals, snacks, over-the-counter medicine, travel pillows, and charging cords. These pre-ordered items are then available for pickup at a designated shelf, either to be consumed at the gate or brought onboard the aircraft.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by United Airlines represents a significant step in enhancing the passenger experience by addressing a common pain point: the limited time and options for obtaining food and essentials between connecting flights or before boarding. By offering pre-ordering, United aims to reduce friction and provide convenience, particularly at high-volume connecting hubs like Newark. This service could improve customer satisfaction, streamline airport operations by potentially reducing queues at traditional concession stands, and offer a new revenue stream for the airline. It also reflects a broader trend in the travel industry towards leveraging technology to personalize and optimize various aspects of the journey, catering to the evolving expectations of modern travelers.
What's Next?
United Airlines plans to expand this pilot program to Houston later this year. The expansion will include popular national restaurant brands and more options for customers, with choices for both pickup and direct gate delivery. The airline will continuously collect customer feedback throughout these pilot phases to assess interest and inform potential future expansion to other airports. If successful and widely adopted, United intends to integrate this service into its seatback inflight entertainment screens, aiming for an even more seamless ordering experience. This phased rollout suggests a strategic approach to refining the service based on real-world usage and feedback.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of pre-ordering services by airlines like United could reshape the airport retail and dining landscape. It signifies a move towards a more integrated and digitally-driven travel ecosystem, where the passenger's journey is managed and personalized through mobile platforms. This could lead to increased competition among airlines to offer similar convenience-focused services, potentially driving innovation in airport logistics and customer service. Furthermore, it highlights the growing importance of data analytics in understanding passenger preferences and tailoring offerings, moving beyond traditional in-flight service models to a more anticipatory and on-demand approach throughout the entire travel process.
