What's Happening?
Mandarin Oriental has introduced MO.RE, a new sustainability platform and manifesto designed to redefine sustainability within the luxury hospitality sector. This initiative aims to integrate resilience, connection, and regeneration into the core of the Group's
operations, growth strategies, and guest experiences. Over the past fifteen years, Mandarin Oriental has made substantial progress towards its 2030 sustainability targets, including a 33% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions and over 80,000 hours contributed by colleagues through volunteering. MO.RE signifies a shift from incremental, compliance-driven actions to a more ambitious approach focused on strengthening business and destination resilience, fostering reconnection between people and nature/culture, and generating positive impacts for communities and ecosystems. The platform's three interconnected pillars—Resilience, Reconnection, and Regeneration—will guide decisions across the entire hotel lifecycle, from investment and development to design, operations, and guest experiences.
Why It's Important?
The launch of MO.RE is a significant development for the luxury hospitality industry, setting a new standard for sustainability that moves beyond basic compliance. By embedding sustainability into its core business strategy, Mandarin Oriental aims to future-proof its operations against climate change and enhance its brand reputation. This initiative can influence other luxury brands to adopt more comprehensive and impactful sustainability practices, potentially leading to a sector-wide shift towards more responsible tourism. For consumers, particularly those who prioritize ethical and environmentally conscious choices, MO.RE offers experiences that align with their values, fostering deeper connections to destinations and contributing to local communities. The focus on resilience, reconnection, and regeneration addresses critical global challenges, demonstrating how businesses can play a proactive role in environmental stewardship and social responsibility, ultimately contributing to long-term sustainable growth and positive societal impact.
What's Next?
MO.RE will be implemented through Group-wide initiatives and locally relevant programs. Key commitments under Resilience include developing climate-risk profiles for each hotel, establishing a decarbonization pathway to net zero by 2050, and increasing visibility of Scope 3 emissions. For Reconnection, plans include a Biodiversity Kids Club concept, annual MO Family Days, and immersive culinary and wellness experiences. Regeneration efforts will focus on biodiversity preservation, vocational education, supporting arts and crafts, and mobilizing celebrity fans for community causes. The MO.RE identity, inspired by the Chinese philosophy of Wuxing, symbolizes balance and interconnectedness, reflecting a shift towards transformative change. Mandarin Oriental, with 47 hotels and numerous residences globally, will continue to expand its presence while integrating these sustainability principles, aiming to make sustainability a business priority, a shared commitment with partners, and a joyful experience for guests.
