What's Happening?
L’Oréal has reached an agreement with Kering and Coty to take over the Gucci Beauty licence one year earlier than initially planned. The licence, which was expected to transition in 2028, will now commence with L’Oréal on July 1, 2027. This decision follows
L’Oréal's €4 billion acquisition of Kering Beauté last year. Coty will receive an early termination fee of approximately $400 million, along with payments related to the sale of Gucci Beauty inventory back to Kering. The agreement allows Coty to focus on its core prestige fragrance and beauty brands as part of its 'Coty:Curated' turnaround plan.
Why It's Important?
The early acquisition of the Gucci Beauty licence by L’Oréal is a strategic move that strengthens its position in the luxury beauty market. By integrating Gucci Beauty into its portfolio, L’Oréal aims to leverage the brand's iconic status to drive growth and expand its influence in the beauty industry. For Coty, the deal provides financial flexibility to reinvest in its priority brands and optimize its organizational structure. The agreement also resolves outstanding litigation related to the Gucci licence, allowing all parties to focus on future growth opportunities.
What's Next?
With the transition set for July 2027, L’Oréal will begin preparations to integrate Gucci Beauty into its L’Oréal Luxe division. The company plans to capitalize on Gucci's brand appeal to enhance its market presence and develop new product lines. Coty, on the other hand, will utilize the funds from the deal to support its turnaround strategy, which includes debt reduction and investment in its core brands. The beauty industry will be watching closely to see how L’Oréal and Gucci Beauty collaborate to create innovative products and capture market share.
