What's Happening?
Ray Green, a former rugby player for the California Golden Bears, has been recognized as one of the top-50 transfer athletes in Cal's history. Green transferred from Towson State and played a pivotal role in the Bears' rugby success during the early 1990s.
Despite suffering a broken leg that kept him out of the national title games in 1993 and 1994, Green returned to co-captain the team to victory in 1995. His leadership and performance were instrumental in the Bears' 48-16 win over Air Force, marking the first championship played at Cal's Witter Rugby Field. Green's contributions extended beyond college as he earned 11 caps with the USA national team and was part of the USA National team 7s squad.
Why It's Important?
Green's recognition underscores the significant impact transfer athletes can have on collegiate sports programs. His leadership and athletic prowess not only contributed to Cal's rugby dominance but also highlighted the potential for transfer students to excel and lead at new institutions. This acknowledgment serves as a testament to the value of the transfer portal in college athletics, allowing athletes to find environments where they can thrive and make substantial contributions. Green's story also emphasizes the importance of resilience and determination in overcoming personal setbacks to achieve team success.
