What's Happening?
The Burning Man Project has initiated a search for a city and community to co-host a global gathering of its community leaders in 2028. This event aims to foster imagination, connection, and peer-to-peer sharing among culture-makers and community leaders worldwide.
The project is seeking proposals from any country, with a particular encouragement for established Burning Man hotspots and culturally vibrant cities. Key requirements for potential hosts include a core team capable of co-leading for at least 12 months, a volunteer network for planning and operations, a primary venue for over 400 attendees with expansion capabilities, and existing ties to local partners such as city officials and cultural institutions. Additionally, the host city must offer international airport access within 90 minutes of the venue, reliable public transit, and wheelchair-accessible venues. Expressions of interest are due by December 1, 2026, with responses being reviewed on a rolling basis.
Why It's Important?
This initiative signifies a strategic expansion of the Burning Man ethos beyond its traditional Black Rock City event, aiming to cultivate its principles of community and creativity on a global scale. By seeking international hosts, the Burning Man Project is working to decentralize its influence and empower local communities to integrate its cultural values. For a host city, this event offers significant benefits, including deeper local relationships with civic and cultural institutions, a higher profile within city government, and a stronger case for the integration of Burning Man culture locally. It also promises lasting local pride and ownership, potentially attracting cultural tourism and fostering creative industries. The global gathering could serve as a catalyst for urban development focused on community engagement and artistic expression, aligning with broader trends in city planning that prioritize cultural vibrancy and citizen participation.
What's Next?
Prospective host cities and communities are invited to submit their expressions of interest by December 1, 2026. The Burning Man Project will review these proposals on a rolling basis, suggesting that early submissions may have an advantage. Following the selection of a host, a comprehensive planning cycle of approximately 12 months or more will commence, involving active partnership between the Burning Man Project and the chosen city's core team. A critical next step will be securing full funding for the event, as the project notes that funding has not yet been secured and the final funding model will require collaborative efforts to ensure a financially feasible and affordable event for the community. This will likely involve engaging with local government, cultural institutions, and potential sponsors to build a robust financial foundation for the 2028 gathering.
Beyond the Headlines
This global outreach by the Burning Man Project reflects a broader trend of cultural movements seeking to establish permanent, localized impacts beyond their flagship events. It highlights a shift from temporary, large-scale gatherings to sustained community-building efforts that integrate artistic and participatory principles into urban fabrics. The initiative also underscores the evolving role of cultural organizations in fostering civic engagement and local identity. By inviting cities to co-host, Burning Man is not just exporting an event but is attempting to embed its philosophy of radical self-expression and communal effort into diverse global contexts. This could lead to new models of urban cultural development, where temporary art installations and community-driven projects become more integrated into city planning and public life, potentially influencing how cities approach public spaces, community art, and citizen participation in the long term.
