What's Happening?
The first official teaser has been released for 'Stewards of the Game: The Untold Lacrosse Story,' an anthology film project. This project, which originated from the early Inside Lacrosse era in the mid-1990s, has evolved into four distinct films. The initial
concept was a film celebrating the lacrosse stick, which then expanded to tell the story of Onondaga craftsman Alf Jacques. As the production team engaged more with Indigenous players, teams, and communities, the project grew. One film traces the game's history from the birth of modern lacrosse in the late 1800s to the present, including the emergence of the Haudenosaunee Nationals and their efforts to secure a place in the Olympics. Two other films explore the Thompson family and the development of women's box lacrosse at Six Nations. Rough cuts of all four films are nearing completion.
Why It's Important?
This documentary project is important because it sheds light on the deep cultural and historical roots of lacrosse, particularly its origins within Indigenous communities. By focusing on figures like Alf Jacques and the Haudenosaunee Nationals, the film highlights the spiritual and traditional significance of the game, often overlooked in mainstream sports narratives. The inclusion of women's box lacrosse at Six Nations also underscores the diverse and evolving nature of the sport. This project can educate a wider audience about the game's heritage, promoting a more inclusive understanding of its development. For the lacrosse community, it offers a rich historical context and celebrates the contributions of Indigenous peoples, potentially fostering greater respect and appreciation for the game's origins. It also brings attention to the ongoing efforts of the Haudenosaunee Nationals to gain international recognition for their unique role in the sport.
What's Next?
With the release of the first official teaser, the 'Stewards of the Game' project is moving closer to its full release. The production team will likely focus on finalizing the rough cuts of all four films and preparing them for distribution. This could involve securing partnerships for screenings, film festivals, or streaming platforms. The teaser aims to generate anticipation and interest, which will be crucial for the successful launch of the full anthology. Audiences can expect further announcements regarding release dates, viewing opportunities, and potentially more promotional materials. The project's creators, including Bob Carpenter, Founder of Inside Lacrosse, and the team members Neal Powless, Michelle Schenandoah, Natalie Welch, Luke Korver, and Zach Heffner, will continue their efforts to bring these untold stories to a global audience.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate release, 'Stewards of the Game' has the potential to spark broader conversations about cultural preservation, Indigenous rights, and the decolonization of sports narratives. By presenting lacrosse as a gift from the Creator and emphasizing the role of caretakers, the documentary challenges conventional notions of ownership and commercialization in sports. It can serve as a powerful educational tool, encouraging viewers to explore the historical and social contexts of games they enjoy. The film's focus on the Haudenosaunee Nationals' fight for Olympic recognition highlights issues of sovereignty and self-determination for Indigenous peoples on the international stage. This project could inspire similar efforts to document and celebrate the cultural origins of other sports, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse heritage that enriches global athletic traditions.
