What's Happening?
The Living Legends Foundation is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary with an Annual Awards Dinner & Gala on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Atlanta. This event aims to recognize and honor the executives,
broadcasters, promoters, attorneys, producers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who have significantly contributed to Black music and entertainment. Founded in 1991 by Ray Harris, Barbara Lewis, C.C. Evans, and Jerry Boulding, the foundation has consistently worked to ensure that the behind-the-scenes architects of Black music history are remembered. The gala will feature prominent figures such as 10-time GRAMMY Award winner Chaka Khan as Honorary Ambassador and Q Parker of 112 as Honorary Gala Chair. The 2026 class of honorees includes Louis Carr, President of BET, receiving the Ray Harris Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Black Promoters Collective receiving the A.D. Washington Chairman’s Award. Other honorees include Kenny Smoov, Greg Street, Juliette Jones, Tim Reid, Phylicia Fant, James McMillan, Ted Lucas, and Ralph McDaniels.
Why It's Important?
This event is crucial for acknowledging the often-overlooked contributions of individuals who have shaped the Black music and entertainment industries. By honoring these 'architects,' the Living Legends Foundation ensures that the rich history and cultural impact of Black music are preserved and celebrated beyond the visible artists. This recognition helps to inspire future generations and provides a comprehensive understanding of the industry's development. The foundation's work extends beyond a single gala, offering confidential financial assistance to Black music and broadcasting professionals in need and providing scholarships to college students pursuing behind-the-scenes careers. This holistic approach supports the community, fosters intergenerational connections, and addresses the historical lack of long-term financial protections for many industry veterans. The event also highlights Atlanta's growing significance as a hub for Black music and culture.
What's Next?
Following the 35th Annual Awards Dinner & Gala, the Living Legends Foundation will continue its mission of honoring Black music history, supporting current professionals, and funding future talent. The organization's ongoing initiatives include providing financial assistance to industry veterans and offering scholarship awards to students. These efforts aim to create a sustainable ecosystem for Black professionals in music and broadcasting. The foundation will likely continue to host similar events in the future, further solidifying its role as a vital institution for preserving and promoting the legacy of Black music. The recognition of this year's honorees is expected to bring increased visibility to their work and inspire more individuals to contribute to the industry's growth and development.
Beyond the Headlines
The Living Legends Foundation's enduring presence for 35 years underscores a deeper societal need to acknowledge and document the contributions of all individuals who build cultural movements. In an industry often focused on front-facing talent, the foundation highlights the ethical imperative to recognize the intellectual, creative, and business infrastructure that enables artistic expression. This initiative also addresses historical inequities, particularly for Black professionals whose contributions may have been marginalized or unrecorded. By creating a 'living archive' and fostering intergenerational dialogue, the foundation helps to ensure that the narratives of Black music are comprehensive and inclusive, reflecting the collective effort behind its global influence. This work contributes to a broader cultural understanding of how industries are built and sustained, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, community, and historical preservation.
