Sinclair Broadcast Group's ventures unit, Guild Ventures, is moving forward with plans for Kenwood Commons, a mixed-use development in Albany, New York. A key component of this project is a hyperscale data center, which Guild Ventures estimates could
consume up to 180 megawatts of power, encompassing the entire mixed-use development. This power consumption level places the data center above the 50-megawatt threshold defined by New York State for hyperscale facilities, making it subject to Governor Kathy Hochul’s year-long moratorium on permitting such facilities. The developers, EKG and Guild Ventures, presented their plans to the Albany community in early August, addressing concerns about energy and water usage. They have commissioned New York’s Independent System Operator (NYISO) to conduct a system impact study to determine the necessary grid upgrades to support the data center. Guild Ventures has indicated that the data center will utilize air cooling technology to minimize water usage and will be housed within an existing building on the Kenwood Commons property. No formal municipal permitting applications or zoning changes have been submitted yet.
