What's Happening?
Vocus has completed a significant upgrade of its Adelaide-Perth 2 (AP2) optical route, increasing its capacity fourfold. This enhancement follows a previous upgrade of the Adelaide-Perth route in 2025, which enabled 400G coast-to-coast services. The dual-system
optical platform now spans 2,700 km, supporting the growing demand for data-intensive workloads across Australia. The upgrade utilizes Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optics, doubling the usable capacity of the existing cable without the need for new fiber installations. This development is part of Vocus' strategy to build the digital infrastructure necessary to support the exponential growth of AI and cloud workloads.
Why It's Important?
The capacity boost on the Adelaide-Perth route is crucial for supporting Australia's digital infrastructure, particularly as AI and cloud services continue to expand. By enhancing east-west connectivity, Vocus is facilitating the movement of data between major cities and international networks. This upgrade reduces latency and improves the reliability of data transmission, which is essential for businesses and government operations. The increased capacity also positions Australia to meet future data demands without significant infrastructure delays.
What's Next?
Vocus plans to continue investing in its national backbone, including projects like the Australia-Singapore Cable and upcoming Pacific Connect and Australia Connect projects with Google. These initiatives aim to further strengthen Australia's connectivity with Asia and the US, supporting enterprise, government, and wholesale connectivity. As data demands grow, Vocus will likely explore additional upgrades and innovations to maintain its competitive edge in the telecommunications industry.
