What's Happening?
Bollinger Shipyards has inaugurated a new Workforce Training Center at its Gulfport facility in partnership with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC). The 7,200-square-foot center is designed to provide hands-on training in structural welding,
electrical work, and pipefitting, preparing students for careers at Bollinger's shipyards across the region. The training program spans 12 weeks at MGCCC's Jackson County Campus, followed by two weeks of on-site training at Bollinger's Pascagoula shipyard. Students begin receiving pay from the first day of training, which is part of an apprenticeship model uncommon in Mississippi. The center will start offering training this fall, with 140 people already approved for the apprenticeship.
Why It's Important?
The opening of the Workforce Training Center is significant for the economic development of the Gulfport region. By providing specialized training, Bollinger Shipyards is addressing the demand for skilled trades and crafts, which is crucial for the growth of the shipbuilding industry. This initiative not only supports Bollinger's expansion plans but also contributes to the local economy by creating job opportunities and enhancing the skill set of the workforce. The apprenticeship model, which includes immediate pay, is likely to attract more individuals to the program, thereby increasing the pool of skilled labor available to meet industry demands.
What's Next?
The training center is set to begin its programs in the fall, with the first batch of apprentices already approved. As the center becomes operational, it is expected to draw attention from other industries looking to adopt similar training models. The success of this initiative could lead to further collaborations between educational institutions and industries, fostering a more skilled workforce across the region. Additionally, the economic benefits of a trained workforce could encourage other companies to invest in the area, potentially leading to more job creation and economic growth.
