What's Happening?
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Kansas City Chiefs honored Mark Cole, Head Coach of Benton High School (Missouri), and Ke'Von Smith, Head Coach of Harmon High School (Kansas), as their Week 8 Coach of the Week recipients. This recognition is part
of a joint initiative between the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League, now in its 30th year, to highlight outstanding high school football coaches. Both coaches were selected for leading their teams to strong performances and for making a significant impact on their players and communities. As part of their award, Coaches Cole and Smith will each receive a $1,000 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition, and a custom game ball. They also qualify for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important because it underscores the Kansas City Chiefs' commitment to community engagement and youth development through sports. By recognizing high school coaches, the program not only celebrates on-field achievements but also acknowledges the vital role these individuals play in shaping young athletes' lives beyond football. The financial grants and recognition provide valuable support to high school football programs, which often operate with limited resources. This program helps foster a positive relationship between a professional sports franchise and its local communities, inspiring future generations of athletes and coaches. It also highlights the broader impact of sports in teaching discipline, teamwork, and leadership, contributing to the overall well-being and development of young people in Missouri and Kansas.
What's Next?
The Kansas City Chiefs will continue to honor high school coaches throughout the 2026 season, with weekly selections from both Missouri and Kansas. At the end of the high school regular season, a panel from the Missouri and Kansas Boards of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association will select the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year. This ongoing program will likely continue to inspire high school football programs and coaches in the region, encouraging dedication and positive community impact. The Chiefs' partnership with PrepsKC ensures continued media coverage and recognition for these coaches and their teams, further amplifying the program's reach and influence within the local football community.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate recognition, this program reflects a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between professional sports and grassroots development. By investing in high school football, the Chiefs are not only nurturing future talent but also strengthening the foundational values of sportsmanship and community spirit. This initiative can have long-term effects on local communities by promoting physical activity, mentorship, and educational opportunities for young people. It also serves as a model for other professional sports organizations to engage with their local communities in meaningful ways, extending their influence beyond game days to foster positive social impact and cultivate a lasting legacy of support for youth sports.
