What is Jio's Satellite Plan?
Reliance Jio is expanding its massive terrestrial network with a new layer of satellite-based broadband service called JioSpaceFiber. This move is facilitated through a joint venture named Jio Space Technology Limited, formed with SES, a leading satellite operator
from Luxembourg. In this partnership, Jio holds a 51% stake, while SES holds 49%. The collaboration aims to deliver high-speed, gigabit-capable internet services to every corner of India, complementing its existing JioFiber (wired) and JioAirFiber (5G wireless) offerings. The stated goal is to ensure that no part of the country, however remote, is left without reliable internet access.
How Does the Technology Work?
JioSpaceFiber will use a multi-orbit satellite network, which combines the strengths of both Geostationary (GEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites. GEO satellites orbit at a very high altitude (around 36,000 km) and appear stationary from the ground, making them excellent for covering vast areas. MEO satellites orbit much closer to Earth (between 2,000 and 35,000 km), which significantly reduces latency, or the delay in data transmission. This MEO constellation, specifically SES's advanced O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites, is key to providing 'fibre-like' speeds and low-latency connections suitable for real-time applications. This hybrid approach allows Jio to offer both wide coverage and high-performance connectivity.
Why Add Satellites to a Fiber Network?
While Jio has built a world-class 4G and 5G network, laying fibre optic cables to every remote village, mountainous region, or island is geographically challenging and economically unfeasible. Satellites overcome these physical barriers entirely. By adding a satellite layer, Jio can provide an immediate solution for high-speed backhaul for its mobile towers in rural areas, strengthening its 5G network reach. More importantly, it can directly offer broadband services to homes, businesses, and government institutions in areas that are currently underserved or completely unconnected, effectively tackling India's digital divide. This also creates a resilient network for disaster-prone regions where terrestrial infrastructure can be compromised.
The Competitive Landscape
Jio is not entering an empty arena. The race for India's satellite internet market is heating up, with major global players like Elon Musk's Starlink and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb also in the fray. These companies, primarily using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, have also secured the necessary licenses but are awaiting final security clearances to begin commercial operations in India. Amazon's Project Kuiper is another future competitor. More recently, Jio has also expressed ambitions to develop its own sovereign LEO satellite constellation, indicating a long-term strategy to reduce reliance on leased capacity and build its own end-to-end infrastructure, aligning with India's focus on strategic autonomy.
What This Means for India
The introduction of JioSpaceFiber, and satellite broadband in general, marks a pivotal moment for Digital India. For the first time, reliable, high-speed internet could become a reality for millions living in the country's most remote locations. This has profound implications for education, telemedicine, e-governance, and economic opportunities in rural India. While the service has already been demonstrated in a few isolated locations like Gir (Gujarat) and Korba (Chhattisgarh), a full commercial rollout is anticipated soon, pending final regulatory approvals. By creating a three-pronged approach with fiber, 5G wireless, and now satellite, Jio is positioning itself to be the comprehensive digital backbone for the entire nation.
