Dr. Peter A. Najjar, a surgeon and clinical innovation vice president at Johns Hopkins Health System, has discussed the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer care. AI is being developed to identify deadly cancers, such as pancreatic
cancer, much earlier than traditional methods. Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to detect early, often diagnosed only after it has spread, leading to a low five-year survival rate of 13%. However, early detection can significantly improve survival rates. AI models have shown the potential to identify signs of pancreatic cancer up to 16 months before human doctors can. This advancement could provide more treatment options and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, AI is accelerating drug discovery by allowing researchers to test potential treatments using computer models, speeding up the development process.
