The Coega Biomass Centre in South Africa has successfully exported 30,000 tonnes of alien wood pellets to a European biomass trading company. This significant shipment, produced over the past year at their plant in the Coega special economic zone, represents
a major step in sustainable fuel production. The pellets are derived from invasive alien trees, primarily eucalyptus, pine, casuarina, and acacia, harvested by their sister company, Stewards of Nature, in and around Nelson Mandela Bay, Addo, and Humansdorp. The export operation involved 14 trucks shuttling between the plant and the Port of Ngqura for six days, working 24/7 to load the cargo onto a vessel. This initiative not only provides an alternative energy source but also addresses environmental concerns by clearing invasive species that consume large amounts of water and contribute to severe fires. The Coega Biomass Centre aims to increase its presence in the South African market, offering these pellets as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, especially with rising carbon taxes and energy costs.

The Coega Biomass Centre plans to continue its efforts to expand its market, with a particular focus on increasing its presence within South Africa. The commercial director, Cas Snijders, indicated that while international exports are valuable, the domestic market holds greater potential. The center anticipates a steady supply of feedstock for at least the next 20 years, given the abundance of alien trees in the Eastern Cape and the legal obligation for South African landowners to remove these species. The ongoing increase in carbon tax and the rising cost of generating energy from fossil fuels in South Africa are expected to further drive demand for these homemade alien wood pellets. The company will likely continue to engage with local businesses, such as food and beverage producers, animal-feed manufacturers, and wood and forestry processors, to promote the adoption of biomass as a cleaner and potentially more cost-effective energy solution.
