What's Happening?
The NAFEM Show is set to return to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando from February 11–13, 2027, focusing on the future of foodservice equipment. The event will showcase innovations, technology, educational programs, and culinary competitions.
Deirdre Flynn, CFSP, Executive Vice President of NAFEM, noted that the industry has regained its pre-pandemic energy while facing new operational challenges. Key themes for the show include sustainability, efficiency, and solutions for labor management, cost-effectiveness, rising costs, and speed of service. A significant change highlighted is the increasing role of automation, robotics, data, and sophisticated multifunction equipment in the foodservice sector. Flynn emphasized that automation will help control costs, manage labor more efficiently, and speed up service, allowing kitchens to adapt faster to menu changes without extensive retrofitting.
Why It's Important?
This event is crucial for the U.S. foodservice industry as it addresses persistent challenges such as labor shortages and rising operational costs. The introduction of advanced automation and robotics can significantly impact how restaurants and other food service operations manage their workforce and finances. By providing solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce reliance on manual labor, the show aims to help businesses maintain profitability and adapt to evolving consumer demands. Operators, dealers, consultants, and designers will have the opportunity to evaluate emerging technologies firsthand, influencing future specifications and capital investments. This focus on innovation is vital for the industry's long-term sustainability and growth, ensuring that U.S. foodservice remains competitive and responsive to market dynamics.
What's Next?
The NAFEM Show in 2027 will feature an inaugural collaboration with Fiera Milano’s HOSTMilano, introducing Host America. This partnership will bring additional international manufacturers and product categories to Orlando, including tabletop, furniture, bakery, and gelato equipment, with representation from various global markets. This expansion will offer attendees a broader range of solutions and foster a more global perspective on foodservice innovation. Educational sessions at @CenterStage will cover current industry impacts, and the WHAT’S HOT! WHAT’S COOL!® new product gallery will display prototypes designed for improved operational performance. The U.S. Culinary Open will also return, expanding the viewing experience for attendees. These initiatives aim to provide comprehensive insights and networking opportunities, shaping the future direction of the foodservice equipment and supplies industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The increasing integration of automation and robotics in foodservice, as highlighted by NAFEM, points to a broader shift in the nature of work within the industry. While these technologies promise cost savings and efficiency, they also raise questions about the future of human employment in kitchens and service roles. The emphasis on 'not taking away the human connection and human interaction' suggests an evolving model where technology supports, rather than entirely replaces, human elements. This trend could lead to a demand for new skill sets in managing and maintaining automated systems, potentially transforming job descriptions and training requirements across the sector. Furthermore, the focus on sustainability and efficiency reflects a growing consumer and regulatory push for more environmentally conscious and resource-optimized operations, influencing product development and operational practices.
