The Maine Potato Board is implementing advanced drone technology to monitor and manage potato fields across the state. Agricultural engineer Curtis Harrison and Potato Board program coordinator Izabelle Higgins are spearheading a pilot program that uses
drones to quickly identify problem areas in fields. This includes detecting beetle infestations, fungal diseases, and nutrient deficiencies. Drones can also be used for localized spraying of fungicides, insecticides, or herbicides, targeting specific affected areas rather than entire fields. This approach offers cost savings, environmental benefits, and increased efficiency for potato growers. The board, established in 1986, serves as both a marketing arm and a research leader for Maine's potato industry, providing services such as low-interest loans, disease studies, and seed potato cultivation. They also assist farmers with adopting new technologies, like GPS in field equipment, and developing more efficient irrigation systems in response to regulations like Maine's 2007 'low flow' rule.
