What's Happening?
Desert Gold Ventures Inc., a regional West African gold exploration company, is advancing its flagship Senegal Mali Shear Zone (SMSZ) gold project located in western Mali near the Senegal border. The project spans a 38 km section of the SMSZ, a gold belt
known for hosting major regional gold mines. The project includes the Barani/Gourbassi oxide development, which has measured and indicated mineral resources of 11.12 million tonnes grading 0.94 g/t gold, and inferred resources of 27.16 million tonnes grading 1.01 g/t gold. An updated preliminary economic assessment (PEA) released in November 2025 outlines a staged open-pit oxide mining operation. The operation will initially focus on the Barani and Gourbassi deposits, with mining starting at Barani East before transitioning to Gourbassi. A modular gravity and carbon-in-leach processing plant will be installed at Barani and later moved to Gourbassi. The updated PEA increases planned production to about 36,000 tonnes per month over a ten-year mine life.
Why It's Important?
The advancement of the SMSZ gold project is significant for the regional economy and the global gold market. With an estimated after-tax net present value of $61 million and an internal rate of return of 57%, the project promises substantial economic benefits. The increase in planned production could enhance the supply of gold, potentially impacting global gold prices. Additionally, the project could stimulate local economic development through job creation and infrastructure improvements, although specific job creation numbers are not stated. The project's success could also encourage further investment in the region's mining sector, contributing to economic diversification and growth.
What's Next?
Desert Gold Ventures has initiated a 4,250-meter Phase 1 reverse-circulation drill program across five priority targets, including Koussili and Gourbassi West North. This program aims to expand known mineralization, test strike and depth extensions, and assess higher-grade zones. The company is also advancing near-mine and regional exploration across the broader SMSZ land package. The commissioning of the Barani gravity plant is targeted for mid-July 2026, marking a significant milestone in the project's development. Continued exploration and development efforts are expected to further define the project's potential and attract additional investment.
