A recent study published in PLOS ONE, analyzing CDC survey data from nearly 400,000 adults, indicates that walking, while America's most popular workout, is often insufficient for individuals to meet federal
physical activity guidelines. The research found that walkers had the highest rate of failing to meet either aerobic or muscle-strengthening recommendations compared to other activity groups. Conversely, those who primarily engaged in running, weightlifting, or conditioning were significantly more likely to meet both guidelines. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio per week and resistance exercises for major muscle groups two to three days a week. While brisk walking contributes to aerobic goals, it does not adequately build muscle, which is crucial for long-term health and combating age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia).
