What's Happening?
French frozen-food retailer Picard is significantly expanding its international reach, particularly in the UK and across Europe. Starting October 26, a selection of Picard products will be available in over 150 Sainsbury's stores in the UK. This move
follows a recent agreement with Czechia-based e-commerce retailer Rohlik, which began offering 20 Picard products last week in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Austria, and Romania. Picard already has a presence in the UK through online grocer Ocado. These partnerships are part of Picard's broader international growth strategy, which emphasizes strong brand equity, high product quality, and the increasing consumer appeal of frozen foods in Europe. Cécile Guillou, Picard Surgelés CEO, stated that these collaborations enhance brand visibility and introduce their culinary expertise to a wider European consumer base. Picard operates over 1,220 stores in France, offering home delivery and click-and-collect services, and has an international presence with stores and shop-in-shop locations across Europe and Asia.
Why It's Important?
This expansion signifies a strategic move by Picard to capitalize on the growing demand for frozen food products and to strengthen its position in key European markets. For UK consumers, the Sainsbury's listing provides increased access to Picard's range of products, potentially diversifying their frozen food options. For Sainsbury's, integrating Picard's offerings could attract new customers and enhance its frozen food aisle's premium perception. The partnership with Rohlik also highlights the increasing importance of e-commerce in the food retail sector, allowing Picard to tap into a broader online customer base across multiple European countries. This trend reflects a shift in consumer purchasing habits towards convenience and online grocery shopping. The move also indicates a competitive landscape in the European frozen food market, with retailers seeking differentiated offerings to create value within their product assortments, as noted by Maxime Margain, Picard Surgelés international director.
What's Next?
Following the launch in Sainsbury's, Picard will likely monitor sales performance and consumer reception to inform future expansion strategies within the UK. The success of these initial listings could lead to an increased product range or availability in more Sainsbury's locations. Similarly, the partnership with Rohlik will provide valuable data on e-commerce performance in Central and Eastern Europe, potentially leading to further product introductions or deeper integration with the platform. Picard's ongoing international growth strategy suggests that more partnerships with major retailers and e-grocers across Europe and potentially other regions could be on the horizon. The company's focus on launching approximately 250 new lines each year indicates a continuous effort to innovate and adapt to consumer preferences, which will be crucial for sustaining its growth in these new markets.
Beyond the Headlines
Picard's expansion reflects a broader trend in the food industry towards internationalization and the leveraging of diverse retail channels, including traditional supermarkets and e-commerce platforms. This strategy allows companies to mitigate risks associated with reliance on a single market and to tap into varied consumer preferences across different regions. The emphasis on 'strong brand equity, high product quality, and the increasing appeal of frozen foods' underscores a shift in consumer perception of frozen products, moving away from a purely convenience-driven choice to one that also values quality and culinary expertise. This could lead to increased investment in product development and marketing within the frozen food sector. Furthermore, the collaboration with e-commerce platforms like Rohlik highlights the evolving logistics and supply chain challenges and opportunities in delivering perishable goods across borders, pushing innovations in cold chain management and last-mile delivery.
