What's Happening?
Dallas thrash band Power Trip has released two new songs, 'Precinct 3' and 'Scavenger,' marking their first new music since the passing of singer Riley Gale in 2020. The band's founding members—guitarist Blake Ibanez, guitarist Nick Stewart, bassist Chris
Whetzel, and drummer Chris Ulsh—reunited in 2024 and enlisted Seth Gilmore as their new vocalist for a series of live shows. This collaboration led to the band entering the studio with Gilmore to record their third album. 'Precinct 3' and 'Scavenger' are the initial offerings from this upcoming LP, which is slated for release in 2027. This will be their first album since 2017's 'Nightmare Logic' and their first with Gilmore on vocals. Blake Ibanez stated that the band approached the songwriting process by considering what Riley Gale would have wanted to write about, which helped the lyrics flow easily and felt like the right way to honor him and kick off this new chapter.
Why It's Important?
The release of new music from Power Trip is significant for the metal community and fans of the band, as it marks a continuation of their legacy after a period of uncertainty following Riley Gale's death. The band's decision to continue with a new vocalist, Seth Gilmore, and to release new material demonstrates resilience and a commitment to their musical vision. This move could help solidify their position in the thrash metal scene and introduce their sound to a new generation of listeners, while also providing a sense of closure and tribute to their late frontman. The anticipation for their third album, their first in a decade, highlights the enduring impact of their previous work and the high expectations for their future output. The band's approach to songwriting, by channeling the spirit of their former vocalist, underscores the emotional weight and dedication behind this new chapter.
What's Next?
Power Trip's third album is scheduled to arrive in the spring of 2027 under their new label, Blue Grape Music. Prior to the album's release, Blue Grape Music will also issue a seven-inch single of 'Precinct 3' in various formats. The band has three additional shows planned for 2026, including a performance supporting Slayer's 'Reign of Blood' 40th Anniversary show in Mexico City on October 21 and a slot at their hometown festival, Sick New World Texas, on October 24. These upcoming performances will provide fans with an opportunity to experience the new material live and see Seth Gilmore's integration into the band before the full album drops. The release of the album and subsequent touring will be crucial in establishing the band's new era and gauging fan reception to their evolved sound.
Beyond the Headlines
The continuation of Power Trip's musical journey after the loss of Riley Gale raises broader questions about artistic legacy, grief, and the evolution of a band's identity. The decision to proceed with a new vocalist while consciously honoring the spirit of their deceased member reflects a complex interplay of personal and professional commitments. This situation could set a precedent for how bands navigate similar tragedies, balancing the desire to preserve their original sound and ethos with the need for creative growth and adaptation. The band's choice of producer, Jacob Hansen, known for his knowledge of both big records and late 80s extreme metal, suggests a deliberate effort to maintain their core identity while striving for a contemporary sound. This delicate balance between honoring the past and embracing the future will be a defining characteristic of Power Trip's new chapter.
