Bedrock Ocean Exploration, a company based in Richmond, California, has announced a significant deployment of its autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to Aberdeen, Scotland. These AUVs, each weighing 132 pounds, are designed to perform seabed mapping
tasks traditionally carried out by crewed survey ships. The deployment is part of a partnership with First Marine Solutions (FMS), an Aberdeen-based company. The AUVs are intended to survey anchor spreads for semi-submersible drilling rigs, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional methods. Bedrock claims that using their AUVs can save up to 92% of the costs compared to using an anchor handling vessel and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) spread, and about 79% compared to a conventional survey vessel. The AUVs are equipped with advanced sensors and are capable of detecting features on the seabed to a high degree of accuracy.
