What's Happening?
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded its sustainability reporting tools by adding water withdrawal data to its AWS Sustainability console. This new feature provides customers with detailed insights into the water footprint associated with their cloud
workloads, allowing them to view annual water withdrawals by AWS Region, service, and account. Historical data is available back to January 2022. The reporting is based on an independently reviewed customer water withdrawal methodology and is intended to help organizations track environmental metrics alongside existing greenhouse gas emissions data. This development comes as water use by data centers is increasingly scrutinized by utilities and policymakers, especially in the context of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.

The introduction of water withdrawal reporting by AWS is significant as it addresses growing concerns about the environmental impact of data centers, particularly their water usage. As data centers expand, especially in water-stressed regions, the demand for water for cooling purposes becomes a critical issue. AWS's initiative to provide transparency in water usage aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals and pressures from stakeholders to reduce ecological footprints. By reaching 75% of its goal to become 'water positive' by 2030, AWS is setting a precedent for other tech companies to follow, potentially influencing industry standards and practices regarding resource management and sustainability.
What's Next?
AWS plans to continue expanding its use of reclaimed water for cooling operations, currently utilizing reclaimed municipal wastewater at 26 data centers, with plans to extend this approach to over 130 facilities across nine jurisdictions. Additionally, AWS supports more than 50 water replenishment projects worldwide, expected to return over 21 billion liters of water annually to local watersheds and communities. These efforts are part of AWS's commitment to becoming 'water positive' by 2030, which may prompt other companies to adopt similar sustainability measures. The ongoing scrutiny of data center water use by policymakers and utilities is likely to drive further innovations and regulatory developments in this area.
