What's Happening?
Walmart has launched a new holiday advertising campaign titled 'A Who Knew Carol,' inspired by the 1992 film 'The Muppet Christmas Carol.' Actor Walton Goggins, known for his roles in 'The White Lotus' and 'Fallout,' is starring as Ebenezer Scrooge in the campaign.
This initiative reunites beloved Muppet characters such as Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat, and Fozzie Bear. Stephanie Beatriz, who voiced Mirabel in Disney’s 'Encanto,' also features as Scrooge’s niece, and Pepé the King Prawn makes his first appearance in the Muppet Christmas Carol universe. The campaign, which debuted on October 26, is a collaboration between Walmart, Disney, and The Muppets Studio, and is presented as a series of holiday commercials rather than a new film. The initial commercial recreates the opening musical number from the original movie, with the Muppets warning about Scrooge's return and including playful references to the 1992 film.
Why It's Important?
This holiday campaign is significant for Walmart as it leverages nostalgia and popular cultural figures to connect with consumers during a crucial retail period. By tapping into the widespread affection for 'The Muppet Christmas Carol,' Walmart aims to create a memorable and emotionally resonant advertising experience, potentially driving increased consumer engagement and holiday sales. The involvement of well-known actors like Walton Goggins and Stephanie Beatriz, alongside iconic Muppet characters, enhances the campaign's appeal and broadens its reach across different demographics. For Disney and The Muppets Studio, this collaboration provides a platform to reintroduce their characters to a new generation while reinforcing their enduring legacy among existing fans. The campaign's focus on holiday shopping experiences, including gift ideas, Black Friday deals, and express delivery, directly supports Walmart's strategic objectives for the holiday season, aiming to position the retailer as a go-to destination for festive purchases.
What's Next?
The 'A Who Knew Carol' campaign is set to continue throughout the holiday season, with additional videos planned for release. These upcoming segments will introduce three new Christmas spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Presents, the Ghost of Deals to Come, and the Ghost of Christmas Fast. Each of these characters will guide Goggins' Scrooge through various aspects of Walmart's holiday shopping offerings, highlighting specific deals, gift options, and delivery services. This phased release strategy aims to maintain consumer interest and provide timely information about Walmart's promotions leading up to and during the holiday shopping rush. This is not Goggins' first time portraying a holiday grouch for Walmart, as he previously played the Grinch in the retailer's 2025 holiday campaign, suggesting a recurring strategy of using popular figures in their seasonal marketing efforts.
Beyond the Headlines
The campaign's success could influence future holiday advertising strategies across the retail sector, potentially leading more companies to invest in nostalgic, character-driven content. The collaboration between a major retailer like Walmart and entertainment giants like Disney and The Muppets Studio highlights a growing trend of cross-industry partnerships to create immersive brand experiences. This approach moves beyond traditional product-focused advertising, aiming instead to evoke emotional connections and cultural relevance. The use of beloved characters like the Muppets taps into a collective cultural memory, fostering a sense of warmth and familiarity that can translate into positive brand perception. Furthermore, the campaign's playful self-awareness, such as Pepé the King Prawn joking about his absence from the 1992 movie, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of its audience and their connection to the source material, enhancing its appeal and memorability.
