What's Happening?
Octopus Energy has launched Octopus Charge, a new free app for iOS and Android designed to simplify public electric vehicle (EV) charging. The app consolidates access to over 211,000 EV chargers across North America, aiming to eliminate the need for drivers
to use multiple apps for different charging networks. Octopus Charge allows users to find, start, and pay for charging sessions through a single platform. The app includes major charging networks such as ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, bp pulse, Shell Recharge, FLO, EV Connect, and Circle K, among its 24 partner networks. Users can filter search results by location, ZIP code, charging speed, connector type, and network, and view live charger availability, compatibility, pricing, and nearby amenities. The app also features an EV-specific route planner and passes through the charging networks' prices without additional markups.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of Octopus Charge addresses a significant pain point for EV owners: the fragmented and often inconvenient public charging infrastructure. By integrating a vast number of chargers from various networks into a single app, Octopus Charge has the potential to enhance the EV user experience, making long-distance travel and daily charging more seamless. This development could accelerate EV adoption by reducing 'range anxiety' and simplifying the charging process, which are key barriers for many potential buyers. For the EV industry, this type of consolidation fosters greater interoperability and could encourage more widespread investment in charging infrastructure. Businesses like Circle K, by being part of such integrated platforms, can attract more EV drivers, potentially increasing foot traffic and sales beyond just charging services. This initiative represents a step towards a more mature and user-friendly EV ecosystem in North America.
What's Next?
Octopus Charge is expected to continue expanding its network of integrated charging partners, aiming to increase its coverage and functionality. The success of the app will likely depend on its ability to maintain accurate real-time data on charger availability and functionality, as well as its user-friendliness. As more EV drivers adopt the app, it could set a new standard for public charging solutions, potentially influencing other charging network providers to seek similar integrations or develop their own consolidated platforms. The company's CEO, Nick Chaset, emphasized the goal of making electric driving simple and removing barriers to EV adoption, suggesting ongoing efforts to enhance the app's features and reach. The North American app is a sibling to Octopus Electroverse, which already provides access to over 1 million charge points across 40 countries in the UK and Europe, indicating a potential long-term vision for comprehensive global coverage.
