What's Happening?
AMC+ is implementing a significant overhaul of its streaming application, introducing new features such as custom user profiles and an enhanced video player. This update, scheduled for later this month, aims to provide a more curated home screen experience,
making it easier for users to discover content. As part of this revamp, AMC+ will begin offering a curated selection of thrillers from Shudder and independent films from Sundance Now, rather than their full catalogs. The complete libraries of Shudder and Sundance Now will remain exclusively available on their respective standalone platforms. New titles arriving with the update include 'Kill Jackie' starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, the supernatural thriller 'YAGA' with Carrie-Anne Moss, and content from Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. Additionally, the entire 'Walking Dead' universe is set to become available on AMC+ in January. The transition will involve a brief outage from November 16-18, during which some account tools, like password resets and cancellations, will be temporarily offline.
Why It's Important?
This strategic move by AMC+ reflects a broader trend in the streaming industry towards content curation and user experience optimization. By offering a 'trimmed' selection from Shudder and Sundance Now, AMC+ aims to streamline its offering and potentially reduce content overload for its subscribers, which could enhance user satisfaction and retention. For subscribers of AMC+, this means a more focused selection of horror and independent films integrated directly into their main subscription, potentially increasing the value proposition of AMC+. However, it also implies that users seeking the full breadth of content from Shudder or Sundance Now will still need separate subscriptions to those services. This approach could impact the subscriber numbers for the standalone Shudder and Sundance Now platforms, as some users might opt for the curated AMC+ selection instead of maintaining multiple subscriptions. The inclusion of the entire 'Walking Dead' universe is also a significant draw, leveraging a popular franchise to attract and retain subscribers.
What's Next?
The new AMC+ app is expected to launch later this month, with the curated content from Shudder and Sundance Now becoming available starting November 18. The full 'Walking Dead' universe will be integrated into the platform in January. During the November 16-18 outage, subscribers should be aware of temporary limitations on account management features. Annual plan subscribers to Shudder will retain access to all Shudder content at no extra cost through the end of their current term, indicating a phased transition for existing users. The success of this curated approach will likely be measured by subscriber engagement and retention rates, as AMC+ seeks to differentiate itself in a competitive streaming market. Future content strategies may further refine the balance between exclusive full catalogs and curated selections across its family of streaming services.
Beyond the Headlines
The decision by AMC+ to curate content from its subsidiary streaming services, rather than offering their full libraries, highlights a strategic shift in how media companies are approaching bundled streaming offerings. This move could be seen as an attempt to create a more distinct identity for AMC+ as a premium, curated service, while still allowing its niche platforms like Shudder and Sundance Now to cater to dedicated fan bases. It also raises questions about the long-term viability of highly specialized streaming services if their content is increasingly integrated into broader bundles. The emphasis on a 'more curated home screen' suggests a focus on algorithmic recommendations and personalized user experiences, which are critical for retaining subscribers in a saturated market. This strategy could lead to a more fragmented streaming landscape where consumers subscribe to a primary bundle for general entertainment and then add niche services for specific interests, or it could push more users towards consolidated platforms that offer a 'best of' selection from various genres.
