What's Happening?
Self Esteem, whose real name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor, has recorded the theme song for Channel 4's upcoming Christmas special, 'Mog's Bad Thing.' She collaborated with James Bond composer David Arnold and Oscar-winning lyricist Don Black on the song titled
'I Wish That Things Could Be That Way Again.' The special is an animated adaptation of Judith Kerr's classic picture book. Taylor expressed her delight in being part of the project and working with Arnold and Black. The festive episode will feature a cat show hosted by the Thomas family, where Mog's 'bad thing' leads to the cat hiding in the attic. The cast includes Adjoa Andoh as narrator, Benedict Cumberbatch as Mr. Thomas, and Claire Foy as Mrs. Thomas.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration brings together prominent musical talents for a beloved children's story, potentially enhancing the appeal of the Christmas special to a wider audience. The involvement of a contemporary artist like Self Esteem alongside established figures like David Arnold and Don Black bridges different generations of music and entertainment. For Self Esteem, this project offers a high-profile platform, especially as she has recently spoken about taking a hiatus from the music industry due to the physical and mental toll of her previous album's promotion cycle. Contributing to a family-friendly Christmas special could diversify her artistic portfolio and reach new demographics, while also providing a creative outlet during her planned break.
What's Next?
The Christmas special 'Mog's Bad Thing' is set to air on Channel 4, featuring the newly recorded theme song. Self Esteem is also planning to release a live record of her recent album, 'A Complicated Woman – Live From Brixton Academy,' on December 4. Following her work on the theme song and the live album release, Taylor intends to take a few months off to reflect on her next steps in her career. The success of the Christmas special and the reception of the theme song could influence her future artistic endeavors and public profile.
