A 2022 randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, led by Earric Lee and colleagues, revealed that adding a 15-minute post-exercise sauna session significantly enhances
cardiovascular fitness. The study involved 47 sedentary adults, aged 49 on average, with at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor. Participants were divided into three groups: one performing guideline-based exercise plus a 15-minute post-exercise sauna, another doing only the exercise, and a control group. The exercise protocol was identical for the active groups, involving moderate-to-vigorous physical activity three times a week. Sauna sessions started at 65°C, increasing by 5°C every two weeks, with humidity between 10% and 20%, immediately following each workout for eight weeks. The results showed that the group combining exercise with sauna use achieved more than double the cardiovascular fitness improvement (VO2 max) compared to the exercise-only group. Specifically, the exercise-plus-sauna group improved VO2 max by +5.6 mL/kg/min, while the exercise-only group improved by +2.6 mL/kg/min. Additionally, the sauna group experienced an 8.0 mmHg greater reduction in systolic blood pressure and significantly lower total cholesterol levels.
