New research from institutions in India and Spain, published in Social Science & Medicine, indicates that individuals are more successful at reducing their smartphone screen time when they set their own reduction goals, rather than being assigned targets.
A 35-day experiment involving 149 volunteers divided into three groups demonstrated this. Participants who chose their own screen time reduction goals (10, 20, or 30 percent) decreased their daily usage by an average of 49 minutes. In contrast, those assigned a 14 percent reduction target only reduced their usage by 23 minutes per day. A control group, given no goals, saw their screen time increase by an average of 11 minutes daily. The self-selected group also met their daily targets 11 percent more often. Reductions in phone use persisted into a post-intervention period for both intervention groups, with the self-selected group maintaining a 16-minute daily reduction from baseline and the assigned group an 11-minute reduction.
