What's Happening?
Goldman Sachs has announced the establishment of the Goldman Sachs Small Business AI Institute, a new initiative designed to support the adoption and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among small businesses in the United States. This institute
is part of a broader $500 million commitment to fund the next phase of the firm's 10,000 Small Businesses program. The Institute will collaborate with major AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI, to provide entrepreneurs with the necessary training and tools to integrate AI into their operations. The goal is to help these businesses grow and scale in the evolving AI economy. Since its inception over 15 years ago, the 10,000 Small Businesses program has assisted nearly 20,000 entrepreneurs across all 50 states and four U.S. territories, with graduates reportedly adding jobs four times faster than similarly-sized U.S. businesses.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant because it addresses a critical gap in AI adoption among small businesses, which are often considered the backbone of the U.S. economy. While a recent survey of 10,000 Small Businesses graduates indicated that 86% use AI, only 15% have fully integrated it into their core operations, and over three-quarters expressed a need for additional training. By providing practical, accessible, and immediate support, Goldman Sachs aims to empower these entrepreneurs to leverage AI for increased competitiveness, innovation, and growth. This investment could help level the playing field between small businesses and larger corporations, ensuring that the benefits of AI technology are not limited to big enterprises. The program's focus on education, access to capital, and support services is crucial for fostering job creation and economic opportunity across the nation.
What's Next?
The Goldman Sachs Small Business AI Institute will focus on three main pillars: delivering high-quality AI education, publishing research on AI use by small businesses, and supporting AI-enabled expansions to access capital. Initial activities include developing a new learning series with Anthropic on applied AI, conducting hands-on workshops for 10,000 Small Businesses alumni, and engaging in research collaborations. The Institute will also partner with Google to offer its Grow with Google AI Professional certificate to nearly 20,000 small business owners and their employees, including three months of free access to Google AI Pro. Meta will contribute by providing AI tools and training through Muse for Small Business, while OpenAI will deliver tailored AI workshops across the country in collaboration with community college partners. These efforts are expected to significantly enhance AI literacy and implementation among small businesses.
Beyond the Headlines
The launch of the Small Business AI Institute highlights a broader trend of financial institutions and tech giants recognizing the transformative potential of AI for all sectors of the economy, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. This collaboration between a major financial institution and leading AI companies underscores a strategic effort to democratize access to advanced technology. It also raises questions about the future of work and the skills gap in an AI-driven economy. By proactively investing in AI education and integration for small businesses, Goldman Sachs is not only fostering economic growth but also potentially influencing public policy discussions around technological equity and workforce development. The initiative could serve as a model for how private sector partnerships can address societal challenges related to technological advancement and economic inclusion.
