Rivian has initiated the rollout of its R2 operating system (OS) to all R1T and R1S vehicles, encompassing both first-generation models from 2021 and second-generation models introduced in 2024. This over-the-air update, designated 2026.31, marks the first time
the company's entire passenger fleet will operate on a single software platform. According to Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid, the R2 OS, which debuted on the R2 in June, has been rebuilt from the ground up with a new design language. The update includes a redesigned interface built on Unreal Engine 5, an on-device language model for the assistant, and a layout described as faster and more intuitive. Key features of the new OS include a vertical status bar, quick controls and a media player that can be moved to either side of the center display, a trip panel on the driver display, and a rebuilt Settings app with universal search. The media app also gains list views for podcasts and audiobooks, along with support for Apple Music, Spotify, TuneIn, and TIDAL. Real-time Waze alerts for speed cameras and police reports are also integrated into the native navigation.
