France is facing its most serious test of the World Cup so far as it takes on Morocco on Thursday. France had
mostly made the World Cup look easy, handily beating all of its opponents by at least two goals. That was, until it faced a surprisingly strong Paraguay, which it beat thanks to a penalty kick from Kylian Mbappé.

Morocco has also yet to lose a game during the World Cup; they notched a draw against Brazil in the group stage, beat the Netherlands in penalties, and thrashed Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. Morocco, as it currently stands, is the highest-ranked FIFA team to have not won a World Cup. Its best result was a fourth-place finish in 2022.
The winner of the France vs. Morocco match will go on to face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals. France is the favorite to beat Morocco, while Spain is the favorite against Belgium, setting up the potential of a semifinal clash between the continental neighbors. Of course, Argentina’s nail-biter against Egypt and France’s close clash with Paraguay are proof that nothing is guaranteed.
