When Jessica Chastain’s limited series The Savant premieres next spring, it will have been nearly two years since the Apple TV+ production was initially scheduled for release. Chastain, who stars in the lead role as an undercover investigator who infiltrates
domestic extremist groups online to prevent catastrophic attacks, never thought the series should have been delayed from its September 2025 release in the first place.
“I really had to go on record that I thought [the postponement] was a mistake,” Chastain told Net-a-Porterabout the shift in release schedule, whichleft the series in limbo after Apple pulled it from programming in the wake ofCharlie Kirk’s assassination. The right-wing political influencer and activist was shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University two weeks before The Savant was scheduled to premiere.
Chastainvoiced her disappointmentwith the decision at the time in a statement shared on social media. “I want to say how much I value my partnership with Apple. They’ve been incredible collaborators and I deeply respect their team,” she wrote. “That said, I wanted to reach out and let you know that we’re not aligned on the decision to pause the release of The Savant.”
“These incidents, though far from encompassing the full range of violence witnessed in the United States, illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted. I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is.”
Speaking about it now, Chastain said she “felt responsible to a lot of people, to all of the actors in the series … to the real person I played, I felt accountability to her because of the sacrifices that she’s made and the difficult things she’s done to keep us all safe.” The Savant is based on a 2019 Cosmopolitan article about the top secret investigator Chastain plays, online extremism, and political violence.
“I learned that it’s OK to be honest. You can be honest in a kind and respectful way and feel like you’re still speaking your truth, you’re still authentic to who you are without being fearful of — I don’t know — I guess of never working again,” she said. “Again, women are [supposed] to feel grateful. Well, we can be grateful and we can also be honest about things. We can be both things at once.”
