Nicolas Cage announced at a New York Comic-Con panel Saturday that he will star in the upcoming fifth season of True Detective, all but confirming the year-old rumors about the actor and the HBO anthology series.
Cage — who recently played a private eye
of sorts in the since-canceled Spider-Man offshoot Spider Noir — broke the news (perhaps accidentally) while discussing his desire to move back and forth between movie and television projects, Entertainment Weekly reports.
“You can only do so many movies back to back to back, and necessity is the mother of invention,” Cage told attendees of the panel. “You can connect those dots, too. What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family; don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective.”
The actor added, “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
While Cage’s announcement was a surprise, his casting was not: As far back as August 2025, Cage was rumored to star in True Detective Season 5, Variety reported. Issa Lopez, who wrote and served as showrunner on Season 4, dubbed True Detective: Night Country, is returning to the roles for the fifth season, which reportedly takes place in Jamaica Bay, New York.
Cage was asked earlier this year about the Season 5 news, and he said he had “no idea” about the show’s status. “I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” he saidin May. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.”
Judging by the actor’s declaration Saturday, it appears he has signed and things are concrete. “My agent’s out there somewhere listening,” Cage quipped.
