Some of the greatest shows on Earth these days are coming from the road warriors who’ve been out there the longest. The toughest are in their eighties: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, George Clinton, Paul McCartney. These are the relentless lifers who have it
in their blood — the ones who can’t not do it. They’re thriving on the road in the 2020s because that’s where they feel at home, and they’re not saving a drop for next year. These legends are way past hiding the cracks in their voices or the lines on their faces. That’s for kids. Instead, they flaunt their eightysomething voices like they’re showing off battle scars.
Dylan is a model for how to keep it fresh: He sings whatever the hell he feels like, with whatever juice he’s got in his 85-year-old growl on any given night. He’s been formidable all summer long, busting out Bo Diddley and Charlie Rich covers with help from a rotating trio of jazz-ace guitarists (Julian Lage, Jad Tariq, and Joel Paterson). But he’s the whippersnapper up there. The señor: Willie Nelson, at 93, who spends his show sitting down, yet playing his unmistakable guitar with those still-mighty fingers. When he can’t hit the notes, he just talks the songs, without surrendering any grit. Seeing Willie talk his way through “Funny How Time Slips Away,” a country classic he wrote more than 60 years ago, while playing that guitar — it’s not merely an inspiration, it’s a challenge, as if he’s saying, “What are you doing with your slipping-away time?”
George Clinton spent last year on the road, celebrating the P-Funk magic. For his 2026 run, he built a whole new Mothership to land onstage, since the original is now in the Smithsonian. Paul Simon announced his retirement in 2018, citing his hearing loss, but made a surprise comeback last year, explaining that new technology now finally made it possible for him to hear himself again. His shows since then have been truly elevating, focused on new material he personally cares about: His 2023 album Seven Psalms. It’s meant so much more than a full oldies set could have. Yet it’s also been poignant to hear him reframe Eighties deep cuts like “Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War,” a song now further away in time than World War II was then.
Van Morrison, who just turned 81, has been killing it on the road with his set of antique blues covers — they probably stir his Celtic juices a lot more than one more summer of crooning “Brown Eyed Girl” would. Longtime Beach Boys singer Al Jardine is taking risks the way old artists should, bringing their cult fave Love You to the stage. Rod Stewart kept his farewell tour going for more than a year, never one to say goodbye too soon. Micky Dolenz can still hit the high notes in “The Porpoise Song.” Ringo Starr spends his entire All-Starr Band show in motion — if he’s not drumming, he’s shaking ass. As a sickly kid, Starr wasn’t expected to see his 18th birthday, but here he is at 86. His fellow Beatle blew everyone away with his North American run last fall, too. Nobody really understands why McCartney keeps pushing himself to absurd lengths, playing marathon shows with superhuman enthusiasm, but he keeps adding new challenges. One reliable joy is how petulant he gets when it’s time to finally go home — we should all be so lucky in our lives to hate anything the way that McCartney hates leaving a stage.
Young is coming off a ferocious couple of live years, first with Crazy Horse and then with the Chrome Hearts. And though he canceled most of his dates for 2026 (“Just needed a break,” he wrote to fans), he came back this fall. The Stones had to shelve their tour plans — sadly, not everybody can be a freak of nature like Mick Jagger, who moves better at 83 than you ever will. But then, he didn’t get this way accidentally — Mick, the son of a gym teacher, got serious about conditioning long before other rock stars.
Stevie Nicks, on the edge of 78, has never been bigger. She spent much of last year selling out arenas and living her best white-winged life. Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are mere saplings of 73, but they retired from touring a decade ago, years before Neil Peart’s death, so it was a very heartening sign when they returned so triumphantly this year. “Alex and I have done some serious soul searching,” Geddy Lee announced in October, “and come to the decision that we fucking miss it.” Well put — that pretty much explains why these lifers crave the road.
But enough about the kids, right? None of these legendary octogenarians are on tour to rehash the past. They’re returning because this is where they feel alive. And they’re the best at what they do precisely because they need to be here. As Young summed it up all those years ago — for players and hustlers, tonight’s the night.
