Travis Barker didn’t want to do this documentary. He’d been filming Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear since 2017, chronicling his life dealing with the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder since surviving a plane crash nine years earlier.
In an incident that made national headlines at the time, the Blink-182 drummer and three friends were in a private jet, heading home from Columbia, South Carolina, when the landing gear burst into flames. Two of his best friends were killed. A third passenger, his close friend and collaborator DJ AM, died a year later of an overdose. Barker was in intense emotional and physical pain. He was suicidal. He wasn’t sure he’d ever make it back.
The drummer had already been scared of planes, so after the 2008 crash, he simply stopped taking them. In fact, the documentary starts with Barker in his room on the Queen Mary 2, sailing across the Atlantic, since that’s the only way he could tour Europe. But this symptom of his PTSD created a strain between the film’s producers and their subject: The natural way for the documentary to end would be to have Barker get on an airplane for the first time in years. But, as Barker has explained in recent interviews, that was not an option at the time. It wasn’t until his now-wife, Kourtney Kardashian, surprised him with a trip to Mexico in 2021 that he went back in the air. A few years later, he decided it would be OK to take another leap, and return to Louder Than Fear, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and is now available on Hulu and Disney+.
Barker, 50, has taken a lot of leaps, and he’s also had to pick himself up plenty of times. From his early days as a trash collector in Laguna Beach, California, to his wild touring era with Blink, to becoming one of the most sought-after drummers in punk, rock, and rap, Barker has battled trauma and addiction — and it’s all laid out in the documentary, which also includes thorough interviews with family, friends, and fellow drummers, and is set largely to a soundtrack of Barker on his kit. Here are six things we learned about the prolific drummer from Louder Than Fear.
A Muppet inspired Barker to play drums.
“As a kid, the first thing that got me interested in drums was Animal from the Muppets. He was wild and always looked like he was having such a good time behind the kit,” Barker says in the documentary. “Everyone else was just whatever; Animal was what I was drawn to.” Barker’s father, Randy, who is also extensively interviewed in the film, remembers him pulling pots and pans out of the cupboards to play on the kitchen floor. So Randy and his wife, Gloria, got their four-year-old a kit — Muppets-themed, of course — and put him in lessons. And as Randy put it, “he just beat the daylights out of it.”
Still, he was young, and concentration didn’t come naturally. “When I was a kid, I really didn’t enjoy practicing,” Travis says in the doc. “At that age, you don’t really wanna do anything, you just wanna go play with your friends. I’m really fortunate that I had a really disciplined schedule with practice.”
He studied jazz drumming, and eventually joined the high school marching band. “My mom, she would sit in the room with him while he practiced — she would tape his drum lessons so she knew exactly what it would sound like, and what he was supposed to be doing,” his sister Tamara Barker remembers in the film. “My mom learned to read music with me,” Barker says. “She could pretty much play what I could play. And she knew whether I was practicing or not.” Tragically, though, Gloria died in 1990, when Travis was 14, so she never got to see what a successful drummer he would one day become.
Barker got tattoos because he figured that would help him commit to a career in music.
These days, Barker is known for the art that covers nearly every square inch of his body. But, as he explains in the documentary, his father was adamantly against him getting any kind of body art. “I got my first tattoo when I was 15,” he explains in the doc. “My dad always said, the day you get a tattoo, I’m gonna kick your ass and kick you out of the house. So I was kinda shook, but at the same time, my mom had just passed away, and in my head things couldn’t get much worse.” Randy was, as expected, pissed. Travis remembers his father calling him an “idiot,” and saying that he’d never be able to get a job. But Barker didn’t want to get a regular job — he wanted to play drums. “I figured, if I get tattoos all over my neck, and all over my body, all over my hands, I can’t get a job, and I won’t have a plan B,” Travis says. “To me that was perfect. My goal was to have enough money to eat, to have somewhere to sleep, and to play the drums.”
It took Barker less than an hour to learn Blink-182’s songs.
After a stint in the local punk band Feeble, Barker joined the Aquabats, a ska outfit that wore elaborate Martian-surfer getups onstage — something Barker didn’t realize until he was getting ready to go onstage for his first show. “I show up the day of the show, and I know all the songs, and I do sound check,” he recalls in the doc. Aquabats singer Christian Jacobs picks up the story from there: “I gave him his costume, and he’s like, ‘Wait, what?’” Despite the miscommunication, Travis spent two years in the band, touring in his rash guard, cape, and goggles, and practicing on pads in the bus every chance he had.
Around 1998, the Aquabats were set to open for pop-punk up-and-comers Blink-182, whose original drummer, Scott Raynor, had to leave for a family emergency. He suggested that they try out Barker, who he’d heard was killer on his kit. “Mark [Hoppus] and Tom [DeLonge] come up to me and said, ‘Yo, our drummer just left, would you consider playing? The only catch is the show starts in an hour.’”
So they went into a dressing room, and went through the songs. Barker didn’t have a drum kit backstage, so he just played on his knees to learn the songs. “During the show, you’re going, is he going to remember when this song ends?” DeLonge jokes in the doc. “Is he going to know the chorus is coming up?”
But the show — which they clip in the documentary — went great. “It really felt special, that show, Travis stepping in, and having it be so effortless,” Hoppus remembers. The feeling must have been palpable. “We were watching, cause obviously, that’s our drummer playing with Blink,” says Jacobs. “You could see Mark and Tom looking at each other… They had stars in their eyes. And Travis was just killing it. I think the guys in our band were looking at each other like, ‘It’s over.’” Barker joined Blink as their full-time drummer later that year.
He had an employee whose only job was to watch him sleep so he didn’t die.
Barker has always hated flying, a trait he believes he got from his mother, who also hated planes. After a friend offered him a pill to relax at some point in the early 2000s, while he was playing with the rap-punk supergroup the Transplants, he started taking pills before getting on flights. “It went from taking painkillers before we go on a flight, to actually having to be on them or I couldn’t even function,” he says in the film. As his ex-wife Shanna Moakler, who co-starred with him in the reality show Meet the Barkers, says in the doc, he would be taking 20 to 30 pills a day: “That just was like, how are you alive right now?”
“I was self-medicating because I was having to fly almost every day and be away from my kids,” he says. “I was taking so many pills that I had a security guard whose only job was to watch me sleep.”
He had a bad feeling about getting on the plane that crashed.
The crux of the film is the 2008 plane crash that changed Barker’s life. By then, Blink had gone on hiatus, and he was playing with rappers from Eminem to Lil Wayne to Jay-Z, as well as in the DJ-drumming project TRV$DJAM with Adam Goldstein, better known as DJ AM.
Barker and Goldstein were traveling with Chris Baker, also known as Lil Chris, who had been Barker’s assistant and best friend for several years; and Charles “Ché” Monroe, Barker’s security guard and good friend. They were traveling home from Columbia, South Carolina, following a private gig. Barker recounts in the film how he hadn’t wanted to go in the first place — he was sick of planes, and didn’t want to leave his young kids at home yet again. “Before I left, my daughter, Alabama, was hysterically crying,” he says in the film. “Just saying, like, ‘The roof is on fire and it’s gonna come off.’… She cried for, like, two hours after I left.”
The show went off well, and wrapped early, by 9 or 10 p.m. Goldstein suggested they leave that night, rather than waiting till the following morning. Barker was down to stay the night, but the others wanted to get out of there. “We basically did a majority rules, who wants to fly home, who doesn’t, and I lost,” he says. “But I was a team player.” It was about midnight by the time they were taking off, and Barker noticed the fog. On a tarmac full of big planes, theirs was the small one, hidden behind the others. “We get out, Chris takes a picture in front of it, and he’s like, ‘Fuck, this plane’s sketch,’” Barker says. He called his dad. “He sent me a picture of the plane,” Randy recounts in the film. “He says, ‘This is what we’re getting on. I don’t really want to get on this plane.’”
That plane would barely make it off the ground. Lil Chris and Ché were killed instantly; Goldstein, then a decade sober, survived, but died a year later of an overdose. Sixty-five percent of Barker’s body was covered in burns, and he spent weeks in a recovery center, isolated from his family. In the documentary, Barker remembers the events of the night in chilling detail. His story is set to an emotional drum solo that Barker based on his memory of the crash. It’s a powerful scene that shows not only how painful this was for Barker, but how drumming has gotten him through his life.
Barker and his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, struggled to have a baby more than the public realized.
Tabloids didn’t shy away from covering the IVF struggles of Barker and his third wife, Kourtney Kardashian, who were vocal about the difficulties of trying to conceive. But what they reveal in this doc is before that ever happened — just six months into their relationship — she became pregnant. They were elated; Barker never thought he’d have another kid, but here he was, having found the love of his life, and he couldn’t wait to do it again. “We were so happy,” Kardashian says in the film.
Three months later, though, they lost the pregnancy — something he reveals in the documentary for the first time. “We go to the doctor, and the doctor tells us the baby doesn’t have a heartbeat,” he reveals. Kardashian describes how they laid in bed together for days and cried. “All we wanted was to have a baby together,” she says in the film. A few years later, after the miscarriage and the failed IVF, they got that wish: Rocky Barker was born in November 2023. Scenes of their blended family — Barker and his three kids, Kardashian and her three kids, along with baby Rocky — are uplifting, offering the viewer a little catharsis after a painful path. “It’s basically the Brady Bunch,” Barker says. As Kardashian puts it, “Even if we look like the Addams family, we’re still like that.” These days, the family travels often — sometimes even by plane.
