“This is just a magical moment for me,” Hilary Duff told a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. “It’s the third time on tour I’ve gotten to say ‘I’m home,’” she said. Duff’s Lucky Me world tour has included stops in Houston, the singer-actor’s
hometown, Los Angeles, where she currently resides, and, now, New York, where she filmed TV show Younger. “I’ve spent some of my most favorite years and months in this city and learned so much about myself as an adult,” she added, tears welling up in her eyes.
Over the course of a two-hour show, Duff reflected on those years, looking back at all that it took to arrive at this moment, and what it means to be a Millennial adult now. Essentially, it was her latest album Luck… or Something personified, brought to life with lots of butterfly-shaped confetti and glittery pink visuals. Earlier this year, Duff returned to the stage for the first time in nearly 20 years for her Small Rooms, Big Nerves trek of intimate shows. While she’s moved onto arenas for the world tour, Duff still flexed her superpower: being able to connect with audiences no matter what.
The singer-actress charmed her mostly Millennial audience, many of whom have been a fan of Duff for 20 years, and counting with throwback hits like “Come Clean” and “Why Not,” and a special guest performance with Good Charlotte. The MSG audience was transported back in time to 2003, the butterfly clips in their hair glinting from the stage lights. Coincidentally, that’s the same year Duff last headlined the Garden.
While Duff acknowledged the special moment, she didn’t stay sentimental for too long. “I came to a lot of hockey games here,” Duff said in a cheeky reference to her ex-husband, former NHL player Mike Comrie. “But now I’m headlining MSG, baby!”
