Mark Ronson, Jessie Reyez, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jorja Smith and more performed the music of Amy Winehouse at a tribute concert Wednesday at London’s Roundhouse.
The all-star gig centered on Winehouse’s breakthrough 2006 LP Back to Black, which was released
20 years ago next week. Backed by Ronson and Salaam Remi, the album’s producers, and the Amy Winehouse Band — a tribute act led by the singer’s bassist and musical director Dale Davis — the artists involved switched off vocals on Back to Black’s 11 tracks.
Bailey Rae kicked off the evening with the title track, followed by singers like Sasha Keable (“Just Friends”), Nia Smith (“Tears Dry on Their Own”), and Skye Newman (“Addicted”). Yebba and Terri Walker followed with “Love Is a Losing Game” and “Me and Mr. Jones” respectively, while Lianne La Havas was tasked with taking on Winehouse’s hit “You Know I’m No Good”:
Baby Rose, Jorja Smith, and FLO were next to the Roundhouse stage — notable as the last venue Winehouse appeared at prior to her July 2011 death — with Jessie Reyez closing out the Back to Black portion of the evening with “Rehab.”
All the artists involved then took the stage for an all-star rendition of “Valerie,” the Zutons song popularized by Winehouse.
The Back to Black 20th anniversary gig will be broadcast in full on the BBC later this month as part of a larger celebration to the singer. A deluxe 20th anniversary edition of the album is also due out Friday.
