Comedian Dane Cook’s house sits perched above Hollywood like a fortress, or a prison. A $7 million modernist hillside oasis with a baby-blue pool and a view stretching halfway across the Pacific, the house is Cook’s prized possession. He bought it back
in 2008, in the boom years, when he was at the height of his career: selling out arenas, breaking chart records — and still a few months away from learning that his brother had stolen nearly every cent he’d earned. But we’ll get to that.
If “Dane Cook” is a name you haven’t thought about for a couple of decades, you wouldn’t be alone. For a period in the mid-2000s, Cook was the pinnacle of the comedy world. His résumé is like an aughts time capsule: one of the first comics to predict the power of social media, who harnessed millions of fans via MySpace; headliner of big Hollywood comedies opposite Jessicas Alba and Simpson; star of an HBO documentary series that aired after Entourage. In one 18-month stretch, Cook released an HBO special, dropped the highest-charting comedy album in 28 years (which eventually went double-platinum), hosted Saturday Night Live — twice — and sold out two shows at Madison Square Garden on the same night. “I had a great run,” he says with a grin.
Yet even at his apex, Cook was often the punch line — his very name a synonym for “overrated douchebag hack.” Other comics couldn’t stand him — partly for artistic reasons, and partly because they were jealous of his success. As a performer, he was always more energy than craft — cannonballing around the stage with his spiky hair and pre-distressed jeans, consonants popping like they were on creatine, sprinkling his Seinfeld-style observational bits on parking garages and mini golf with punchlines about blowjobs and tits. (Sample joke: “When you’re with somebody awful — I call that a relationshit!”) And no one could touch him.
Comedian Nikki Glaser was a huge Cook fan who once planned a girls’ trip to Las Vegas in college just to see him perform. “He was the biggest comedian in the world when I was starting out, so his influence was undeniable,” Glaser says. “There are still so many comics today who remind me of Dane, whether or not people remember him for it. He presented like a dumb frat bro, but he would sprinkle in phrases and new groupings of words that illustrated his point almost poetically. His comedy was almost musical — people would put it on at parties to just hang out to. To this day, I don’t know a comedian my friends listen to like we listened to Dane.”
But even as Cook stood astride show business, his life was secretly being dismantled under his feet. What he didn’t know was that his half-brother, Darryl McCauley — who’d served as Cook’s business manager since before he was famous — had been embezzling from him for years, possibly decades. It all came crashing down in 2008, when Cook got suspicious and started asking questions, and McCauley went on the run before being arrested. When the Massachusetts attorney general’s office finished their forensic audit, they put the total theft around $12 million. And that’s just what they could prove. Cook thinks it might be double that.
Cook avoided talking about it in public for years, for a variety of reasons. He was devastated, he was ashamed, he couldn’t figure out how to make it entertaining. But now he has a documentary — Funny Money, streaming on Netflix starting Nov. 6 — that details the whole sordid tale for the first time. “There was a hope and a concern,” Cook says of the film. “The hope was that this was a true-crime story that’s funny. The concern was that I’m a sad clown. I cried more [doing the film] than I did in therapy. So there’s really some anxiety that you see me like this.”
Cook, 56, is sitting in his home office, full of platinum records and framed magazine covers — a shrine to his fiveish-year peak. He’s wearing Earth-tone Nikes and a fitted brown polo, his highlighted hair both thicker and more kempt than it used to be. The shelves behind his desk are filled with fun nerd memorabilia, like an Obi-Wan Kenobi toy and a still-unboxed Wolverine.
As a kid, Cook used to spend hours playing with these toys — Stormtroopers battling G.I. Joes, Chewbacca fighting Doctor Doom. “But it was never ‘evil and bad’ for me,” he says. “It was always ‘misunderstood.’” What was Darth Vader’s trauma? What if Cobra Commander just needed a friend? “I was the only person watching Die Hard like: ‘But what happened to Hans?’”
For the past two decades, he’s been trying to figure out the same things about his brother. “Sometimes I sit and wonder, ‘Who is Darryl?’” he says. He shakes his head. “I don’t know.”
COOK GREW UP IN Arlington, Massachusetts, a working-class suburb of Boston. “I was very much a wallflower introvert,” he says. “A lot of anxiety. Mama’s boy.” He had cystic acne that left deep scars on his face. This is why he always moved around so much onstage — what he calls “the whirling-dervish thing.” “I just didn’t want you to look at me,” he says. “If I don’t stay still, then you won’t key in and go, ‘You’re ugly.’”
Darryl was seven years older — his half-brother from his mom’s first marriage. They were never extremely close on account of the age difference, but they did share a bedroom, and they did hang out — playing R.B.I. Baseball on Nintendo, or raking the leaves while the other held the bag. Darryl was a manager at Burger King and hired Cook to work the drive-thru.
To this day, Cook has never had a drink or done a drug in his life. That’s probably because his dad was a violent alcoholic. The house was “a place of mayhem,” he says: shouting matches, wall-shaking fights, and one harrowing incident when he was 14 involving a kitchen knife that ended with his father being arrested and leaving the house. Cook says he was never a target of the abuse per se, so Darryl didn’t protect him. But just his presence helped Cook feel safe. “I remember so many nights, looking over at him as I was going to sleep,” Cook says. “Just happy he was there.”
Not long after his 18th birthday, Cook started doing standup around Boston. From there it was a long slog to overnight success: six years of living at home, doing shitty gigs at laundromats, Chinese restaurants, and open mics. “I’d spend more on gas driving my mom’s 1978 Lincoln to Maine and back than I’d even make,” he says. “A Tuesday night meant hoping you’d get up at Nick’s Comedy Stop next to the Combat Zone, where maybe I can make a couple prostitutes laugh on the way out.” Eventually he got successful enough to move to New York, and later L.A., where he landed such glamorous jobs as half a season on an ABC sitcom starring Betty White and a Dennis Rodman movie that grossed $292,000 worldwide.
Meanwhile, Darryl — who’d dreamed of being a state trooper but failed the test — was working as a corrections officer at Walpole State Prison (now called MCI-Cedar Junction), a maximum-security facility near Boston. (You might know it from The Town.) “It was a scary place,” Cook says. “I hated that he worked there.” He started plotting how to get Darryl out. “I’m incorporated now,” he recalls thinking. “Maybe at some point I can turn this into a regular around-the-clock job for us.” Then a month later, Darryl was viciously attacked by an inmate. “Some old guy put a can of corn niblets in a pillowcase and boom — cracked Darryl’s head open,” says Cook. “I go see him in the hospital. My mom is terrified. We’re all terrified. That’s when I said, ‘I want you to quit and come work for me.’”
In the beginning, Darryl was more like an assistant: paying the car insurance, boxing up CDs to ship out, selling merch at shows. But as the checks started getting more zeros, the job got bigger. Darryl became Cook’s business manager, handling operations at his company, Great Dane Enterprises, complete with a $150,000 salary. Cook says he had no reservations about giving control of his finances to someone relatively unqualified. “I felt like, he’d believed in me,” he says. “We’d gone through a lot of crazy shit together, we got out of that house, we have some normalcy and an income now. We would sit at dinner and be like, ‘This feels good. Cook-McCauley brothers for life.’
“And there was a certain safety,” he says. “Me already seeing some of the piranhas in this town, and the bad language in the contracts, I’m like: ‘But I’ve got my brother looking out for me.’”
Darryl didn’t show Cook his financial statements. Instead he would create Excel spreadsheets with “summaries” of everything going in and out. Cook says he never questioned them. For one thing, he has “dyscalculia,” the numerical version of dyslexia. (“I see numbers and they just spin around.”) Darryl also kept it low-key. “Same pair of dirty sneakers. No frills,” Cook says. “Anytime I would say to him, ‘Is there anything you want or need?’ he was like, ‘No.’” (In hindsight, that’s probably because he was stealing all Cook’s money.)
And ultimately, Cook says, he never really cared about the money. “I just love the game,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many times I’d leave a gig and they’d call me at home and go, ‘You know you forgot your check?’ So no, I didn’t ask. I believed the statements.”
‘FUNNY MONEY’ TAKES A WHILE to get going, with its first third chronicling Cook’s long rise, but when it finally drops into gear, it’s compelling — especially as it catalogues the breadth and depth of Darryl’s deceit. Cook still isn’t sure when it started, but it grew exponentially. In 2004, Darryl was writing himself checks for $22,000 here, $31,000 there. Two years later — Cook’s commercial zenith — Darryl was making deposits as flagrant as $780,000 and $995,000. As Cook’s (legit, later-hired) business manager says in the film: “There wasn’t even an attempt to hide it.”
By the fall of 2008, Cook decided to transfer all his business dealings to a more established firm. The new business manager kept asking Darryl for his files; Darryl kept ducking him. Soon he stopped returning the manager’s calls. Then he stopped returning Cook’s.
In a joke from his 2003 album, Harmful If Swallowed, a girl tells Cook that all men want is sex. Not true, he says: “Any guy here — if they had the choice — would rather be part of a heist.” The Darryl story also ends with a heist — this one in broad daylight.
In December of 2008, McCauley walked into a Bank of America in downtown Boston with a check from Cook’s company made out to himself for $3 million. It also had Cook’s forged signature. Incredibly, the bank cashed the check, and McCauley stuffed the cash into literal duffel bags, which he loaded into a rented Escalade and drove away. A final $3 million fuck-you.
Increasingly frantic that he couldn’t reach Darryl, Cook went to a bank branch near his house. A sympathetic employee pulled up his accounts. One had $110,000 in it. Another was empty.
“I’ve never been in a plane crash,” Cook says. “But I imagine when everything’s rattling, and you start to hear unusual sounds, and things are tearing apart — that’s kind of how I felt. My legs go out from under me. I’m howling with sadness. Because I know my best friend in the world has done this.”
“It was a shattering unlike I ever imagined,” he continues. “I’ve had a couple of bad panic attacks in my life — like, catatonic. Nothing compared to what I felt that day. I could cry right now thinking of it.”
Cook called the cops, who brought in the FBI. Darryl went on the run — a wild sequence in the doc — and was arrested by Massachusetts State Police a few weeks later. His wife, Erika, was also arrested; when police searched the couple’s home near Boston, they found $800,000 in cash stashed in a wall safe. A separate search of their beach house in Maine turned up hundreds of thousands more: bricks of cash in Tupperware tubs of tomato sauce hidden in the freezer; $90,000 in a box of Bagel Bites; $150,000 buried in the dirt of a potted plant.
Investigators later found that the couple had spent $5 million on real estate and investments and $500,000 on jewelry. There were also vacations in Ireland, a time-share in St. Kitts, and his-and-hers Cadillacs, along with $2.7 million in cashier’s checks that were never accounted for. “I think it’s way more than the $12 million,” Cook says today. “I’m thinking $17 to $22 million is really the number.”
McCauley pled guilty to 27 counts of larceny, three counts of forgery and one count of embezzlement. He was sentenced to six years in Walpole — the very same prison where he’d worked as a guard. Cook, meanwhile, was very fucked. Not only was all his money gone. He also owed the IRS for the taxes Darryl hadn’t paid — a staggering $6 million with interest.
What Cook did next was truly impressive. He still had about $300,000 in stocks that Darryl somehow hadn’t touched. He used the money to book himself an arena tour, renting the venues out of his own pocket. “I take the door, they take the food, I sell my merch,” he says. “If I’m renting a $35,000 dollar arena, there’s nights where I’m walking out with $350,000. I was like, ‘I’m gonna go down maybe. But not because of you.’” He spent the next two years crisscrossing the country, playing a hundred-plus shows, often back to back to back. And by the end, “I’d made everything back that they told me he took.”
That was the financial hole. The emotional hole took much longer.
“The humiliation was way more damaging than the theft,” says Cook. “All my childhood stuff I thought I’d overcome, all the insecurity that was still there but shielded by success, all the self-loathing I felt as a kid — it all came back. I’m on the school playground that I thought I got away from, and everyone’s looking at me going, ‘This fucking idiot. What a moron.’”
He couldn’t write any jokes or get onstage for a year. “I was bad, man. The ruminating was really bad. All through the night. I was trying to find girls to spend time with — just unhealthy. Sex. Trauma dumping. It’s love, and it’s temporary, and then it’s rinse and repeat, another night.”
To make matters worse, this was all going down when Cook was grappling with multiple other catastrophes, both personal and professional. A couple of years earlier, he’d lost both parents to cancer within a span of nine months — a double dose of tragedy that initially brought him and Darryl closer, but ultimately made their estrangement even more painful. Around the same time, Cook was famously (and, in hindsight, unfairly) accused of joke-stealing by a pre-disgraced Louis C.K., leading to a pile-on of haters and internet stand-up police. Not to mention the normal backlash and decline he was already facing from overexposure and his defiantly un-P.C. shtick.
“I’m just spinning,” Cook recalls of this time. “I’m no longer in vogue. Also my parents have passed, and I’m probably ignoring that and not grieving. I’m doing sets at night because it’s alleviating the sadness of the day.”
One of his first shows back was a disastrous, rambling set at the Hollywood Improv, where other comics described him as “spiraling” as he reportedly told “jokes” like: “Go fuck a dirty whore. That’s the best therapy.” Eventually he realized he needed actual therapy. “It was like a year of twice a week,” he says. “Brick by brick. Figuring out again how to move in the world.”
It’s hard not to notice that Cook’s trajectory changed drastically after Darryl’s betrayal. Since 2009, he’s done just two stand-up specials and only a handful of acting gigs (including four episodes of a sitcom that got canceled before it aired). It’s been seven years since he appeared on TV or film at all. From the outside, it looks like his life got derailed and he never got it back on track.
Was it just the natural cycle of fame? The more intellectual turn stand-up took in the 2010s? Or does he blame his brother for that?
“I did blame him for a while,” Cook says. “I knew I was at the end of a run in my career — I’m cooling off. At that point where the pendulum naturally swings and everything slows down, I didn’t have the bandwidth to untangle the knots. But also, being realistic,” he adds, “I wasn’t putting up, like, Sandler $100 million movies. I was hitting doubles.”
For years, Cook struggled with how to tell the story. He wrote a few bad jokes about it. (“My brother was a prison guard. I hired him to protect my money, not help it escape!”) He even tried some material out on his therapist. (“Man. Worst audience. The stonewalling I took on some of my gems…”) For a while he thought about doing a one-man show. But he could never figure out how to get into it all while still delivering for his fans. “They’re there to see me do what I do,” he says. “I wasn’t ready to bum them out.”
Then in 2019, he talked about it on a podcast for the first time, and it unlocked something. Soon after, he got a call from the documentary’s producer offering him a million dollars.
There is, of course, one big, Darryl-sized hole in the film. McCauley turned down multiple requests to be interviewed by the filmmakers. Cook even offered to drop his $12 million restitution claim in exchange for a face-to-face sit-down; Darryl declined. According to Darryl’s LinkedIn page, after his release from prison, he worked for six months at a Home Depot, three years at a grocery store, and five years as a driver for FedEx, before entering “semi-retirement” in 2024. His bio says he “possess[es] strong judgement and decision making skills.” And in the “Skills” section, he lists one: “Finance.”
Cook says he’s never tried to reach out to his brother. He seems to be waiting for Darryl to make the first move. Even 17 years later, he sounds freshly wounded, yet surprisingly open to reconciliation. “Even in this doc, there’s some version of a love letter to my brother,” he says. “Like: ‘You did a lot for me. We did a lot together. Why are you dumb?’”
Cook claims — incredibly — that if he could go back, he wouldn’t change a thing. “I feel like it’s all brought me to the best of my life,” he insists. “Where I’m at right now is way more interesting than anything that would have happened, had nothing happened.”
“But I do miss my brother sometimes,” he adds. “I miss that guy I game-planned with. That I made those first flyers with back in the day. A million memories of high-fives and bad fast food and driving to gigs. It was cool having an older brother. If I had a time machine, I’d probably go back and throw one more hug on him.”
And yet.
Just a few months ago, his younger sister Courtney got a DM from Darryl. It was the first time any of them had heard from him in decades. The message, says Cook:
“‘Everybody’s wrong. It was $12.8 million.’ With a money bag emoji.”
LATER THAT NIGHT, COOK rolls into a theater in Santa Monica for the documentary’s premiere — the first time he’s seen it with strangers. Friars Club roastmaster Jeff Ross is in the house; Cook’s pal Dave Chappelle was going to come, too, but he had to bail last-minute. Seated next to Cook is his wife of three years, Kelsi. She’s 26 years his junior — they started dating when she was 18 and he was 42 — but at least Cook jokes about it. (Goes one bit: “People are like, You’re robbing the cradle. I’m like, Relax. She hasn’t slept in a cradle in nine years.”)
The audience is admittedly full of friends and fans, but the movie goes over great. People laugh and gasp in all the right spots. Ross uncorks a few nice heckles. Afterward, Cook is beaming. “Putting up a win with the worst moment of your life is fucking awesome,” he says. “I have regained the narrative that was hijacked from me.”
Earlier, in his office, Cook talked about the future. He hopes the documentary will be a “catalyst” for his career. He’s been inspired by seeing Chappelle and Chris Rock still touring and directing films, and says he’s hungry to get back to that level. “I belong there,” he says. “That’s the class I put myself in.”
He’s been getting in shape — preparing his mind and body. Kelsi is a certified Pilates trainer and fitness instructor, and she has him on a strict 2,000-calorie diet, doing an hour of Pilates and swimming every morning and in bed by 8 every night. He sounds like a prizefighter training for a comeback.
Can he make one? Who’s to say? Flip phones are cool again — why not Dane Cook?
“I have always been rooting for Dane,” says Nikki Glaser. “I’m sure his downfall was schadenfreude for a lot of comedians, but I think the comics at the top now owe him a lot. There’s been a stand-up boom since he showed up on the scene that hasn’t really dropped off. He made it popular, he made it sexy, and he changed the scale at which it could be done. And he’s still got it.”
Lately Cook has been taking meetings, trying to get some momentum back. He says he recently landed a role on a prestige drama from “one of the greatest producers of all time.” He wrote a book about his story and has a new hour of stand-up that he calls the best he’s ever done. His misfortune is already opening doors.
Cook is almost heartbreakingly earnest when he talks about getting back to work. “Permission to speak freely?” he says. “I’d love to work more. I’m so ready. I hope this reminds people, if you have forgotten: I’m a workhorse. I love to show up on time. I love to create an environment for the cast and crew where they go, ‘I want to work with Dane again.’
“I didn’t work for a long time,” he says. “I hate being on the bench. I’m OK with whatever it is. I just want to be working.”
In some ways, he sounds like a kid still looking for approval. From an audience, a dad… or maybe a big brother. “When I’m on set and hitting the mark, and I get the arm around me walking out of the studio saying, ‘You brought it today’?” he says. “That’s all I want. I think I’ve got a little bit of that left.”
