Sixty years ago, on Aug. 29, 1966, the Beatles played their final live show, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. It was a turning point for the Fabs — the night that John, Paul, George, and Ringo quit the road. They signed off with one last bash at “Long
Tall Sally,” four boys in the freezing fog and wind, proving to themselves one last time that they’re still the greatest rock & roll group, the toppermost of the poppermost. But then they took their goodnight bows, and that was it: the final twist. The final shout. The last stand of the Beatles as a live band.
They didn’t announce anything at Candlestick Park — none of the crowd had any clue this was the end. But all four Beatles knew it. They were sick of racing from town to town, for quickie 25-minute gigs where they couldn’t hear themselves play. They were sick of stadiums, with no room to explore their complex new sounds onstage. They were sick of saying “We’d like to carry on now” every night.
Candlestick turned out to be a new beginning — finally, they were free to experiment full-time in the studio, far away from the airports and hotels and dressing rooms. They were about to take off into new musical adventures that would transform the world. But at the time, the boys had no idea if they had any future at all. On the plane back to England, George Harrison came out and said it out loud. “Well, that’s it,” he told a reporter. “I’m not a Beatle anymore.”
Yet the concert had a mysterious coda. After they finished with “Long Tall Sally,” John Lennon tantalized the crowd with the opening guitar lick of “In My Life.” It was the kind of Beatle song they couldn’t play live— too delicate to work in a stadium full of screaming fans. But it was a taste of their future — the music they were determined to make from now on. The “In My Life” riff was John’s farewell to their live audiences—but it was also an invitation to come along for the future.
Their entire American tour in August 1966 was one long nightmare, plagued by controversy. A Ku Klux Klan protest rally outside their Memphis show drew 8000 people. But at Candlestick, they sound looser and giddier than usual, because they know it’s the last time. You can hear them crack each other up, making cheeky private jokes because nobody’s listening to a word they say. At one point, Paul announces, “We’d like to do the next number now, which is a special request for all the wonderful backroom boys on this tour. And the song is called, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man!’”
But nobody noticed — which illustrates why they needed to quit the road. Not even Brian Epstein heard Paul’s quip — he missed the show because he was back in L.A., trying to pay off a predatory ex-boyfriend threatening him with blackmail.
The Fabs played eleven songs: “Rock & Roll Music,” “She’s a Woman,” the George showcase “If I Needed Someone,” “Day Tripper,” “Baby’s In Black,” “I Feel Fine,” “Yesterday,” Ringo yelping “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “Nowhere Man,” “Paperback Writer,” and the finale, “Long Tall Sally.” Note how they begin and end with American tunes by two of their boyhood idols, Chuck Berry and Little Richard.
But also note that they don’t play a single song from the new album they just released a few weeks ago—Revolver, it’s called. The Beatles, like everyone else, are stunned at how brilliant it is. But the songs are too expansive, too weird, to translate to the stage. Tape loops? A classical string octet? Sitars and tablas? As Paul announces in the NME, with all his sublime Macca hubris, “We did it because I, for one, am sick of doing sounds that people can claim to have heard before.”
Making this music together in Abbey Road, back in the springtime, they felt like gods. Now here they are playing soggy one-nighters in baseball parks—what a comedown. That tension could have ripped the band apart. But instead, it united them in the toughest decision they’d ever faced—walking away from the applause and into the future.
The summer tour was hounded by protests and murder threats, after the U.S. tabloids discovered a forgotten Evening Standard interview where John said, “We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Politicians and preachers denounced them for blasphemy, perversion, and their loud support for civil rights. When they played Memphis, the band refused — as always — to permit racial segregation at the show. As John recalled, “The Klan were burning Beatle records outside.”
During the show, a kid threw a firecracker onstage during “If I Needed Someone.” It blew up right in front of Ringo’s drums. “Every one of us — I think it’s on film — looked at each other,” John said, “because each thought it was the other that had been shot. It was that bad.”
John gave a Chicago press conference to calm down the blasphemy crisis. Yes, now there was a brilliant idea — sending John Lennon on a diplomacy mission. He totally failed, because he refused to pretend he was sorry. All he did was toss out some more inflammatory remarks, from “I don’t profess to be a practicing Christian” to “Britain’s becoming a police state.” He refused to blame it on the Evening Standard reporter. (Maureen Cleave was a trusted friend, and their interview had been a serious intellectual discussion; he wasn’t at all tempted to sell her out.) He even had the gall to speculate that if Jesus were still around, “‘Eleanor Rigby’ wouldn’t mean that much to him.” It’s definitely the last time in his life that anybody ever asked John to talk his way out of trouble.
The final weeks of August were one disaster after another. Their Cleveland show on the 14th turned into chaos, as thousands of fans crashed through the security barriers. They had to stop playing and hide backstage for 30 minutes until it was safe to go back out and finish. A week later, in Cincinnati, they played in the pouring rain, convinced they were about to get electrocuted. As Paul recalled in The Beatles Anthology, “It felt like the worst little gig we’d ever played at even before we started as a band.”
That night was the turning point — it’s when Paul gave up trying to talk George and John out of quitting the road. “At that moment everyone said, ‘Oh, this bloody touring lark—I’ve had it up to here, man,’” Paul recalled. “I finally agreed. I’d been trying to say, ‘Ah, touring’s good and it keeps us sharp’…But finally I agreed with them.” Damn — you know things are desperate when Paul admits George was right about something.
But not so fast, lads — they still had one more week to go, and a miserable week it was. In L.A., the night before Candlestick, their Dodgers Stadium gig turned into a riot, as 7000 fans stormed their getaway van. The Beatles were trapped in their dressing room for two hours after the show.
The Stick could have been another nowhere gig, in another bloody baseball park—the game’s most hated stadium, a notoriously cold, damp windbox known as the “Ashtray by the Bay.” It was home to the San Francisco Giants, who had their own heartbreak season in 1966, just missing the pennant a game and a half behind the Dodgers. (The night the Beatles played, the Giants were away in Philly, getting their asses kicked 5-1 by Jim Bunning’s slider.)
But for some reason, the Beatles are having a blast tonight, enjoying their little secret. They rip into these songs with renewed relish — especially “Baby’s in Black,” an eyeball-to-eyeball duet that John and Paul can never resist singing, even though they’re fully aware nobody else loves it the way they do. The stage banter is hilarious self-parody. John announces, “We’d like to carry on now…carry on together…and we’re all one together and all for one…with another number that used to be a single record back in, ah, a long time ago. And this is about a naughty lady called ‘Day Tripper!’”
Like anyone who visits the Bay Area in August, they can’t stop talking about how freezing it is. Paul mutters, “Frisco butchered,” a taunting reference to the censored U.S. album coverfor Yesterday…and Today.
“It’s been wonderful being here in this wonderful sea air,” Paul says at the end. “Sorry about the weather. And we’d like to ask you to join in and clap, sing, talk — in fact, go on, do anything. Anyway, the last song is: good night!” They close with the 1956 Little Richard classic “Long Tall Sally,” always one of their faves to perform. But it also has a secret private resonance—it’s the song that Paul played on guitar for John on the day they met, nine years earlier. It’s where their whole friendship began.
The Beatles have performed “Long Tall Sally” hundreds of times, from the Cavern Club to Hamburg, from Shea Stadium to the Hollywood Bowl. They’ve played it for sleazy bars full of German gangsters cleaning their guns; they’ve played it for theaters full of screaming girls. But tonight, it’s the song they choose to cap off their live career—such a poignant choice. They really are getting back to where they once belonged.
And then — with that final “In My Life” guitar teaser — it’s all over. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Ralph J. Gleason called it “the shortest rock concert I ever attended,” dismissing it as a “puppet show” and presciently noting, “It can hardly continue to be attractive to four such rational, intelligent, and talented human beings.” Even Paul, the only Beatle who still had a zest for touring, realized the dream was over. Within hours of the San Francisco show, on the flight out, he told TeenSet’s Judith Sims, “We’re not very good performers, actually. We’re better in a recording studio where we can control things and work on it until it’s right.” The closest they ever came to another show was their rooftop romp at the end of Get Back.
Their friend and rival Keith Richards had a theory. “Three thousand screaming chicks could just wail you out of the whole place,” he told Esquire in 2015. “Just looking at the crowd, you could see them dragging the chicks out, sweating, screaming, convulsing.” Even Keith couldn’t imagine taking that kind of punishment. “They talk about us, but the Beatles, those chicks wore those guys out. They stopped touring in 1966 — they were ready to go to India and shit.”
The Beatles had a crucial post-tour project coming up in the fall of 1966 — in retrospect, one of the wisest moves they ever made. They took a break, with three months off. All four pursued their personal projects, detoxing from the road. John went to Spain to play a supporting role in the art film How I Won the War, cutting his hair and donning the granny glasses he’d wear for the rest of his life. Paul scored a film soundtrack, for The Family Way — the first album any of them made outside the band. George traveled to India to study the sitar at the feet of his new guru, Ravi Shankar. Ringo started his own construction company, Bricky Builders.
But during their time apart, their friendship got tighter than ever. Ringo traveled out to Spain to visit John, just because they missed each other. John hated being so far from the others. “I did try to go on my own after we stopped touring,” he said at the time, to biographer Hunter Davies. “I had a few good laughs and games of Monopoly on my film, but it didn’t work. I didn’t meet anyone else I liked.”
This was arguably the most successful vacation in music history. When they regrouped, their creative batteries were charged. “I was never so glad to see the others,” John said. “Seeing them made me feel normal again.” That led to their triumphs of 1967, including Sgt. Pepper, “Penny Lane,” “I Am the Walrus.” And oh yes, a little song that John wrote on a Spanish beach, lost in his loneliness: “Strawberry Fields Forever,” not bad for vacation work. It was the first song he played them back at Abbey Road; there was a stunned silence until Paul said, “That is absolutely brilliant.” They got inspired to stay up all night recording it — the version we know today is the sound of all four Beatles overjoyed to be back in the same room together.
Candlestick Park made it all possible. The Beatles had to quit the road to save the band. When they took their final bows that night, they worried they might be destroying everything they’d built. But instead, it opened up a new future for them.
