25 years ago this week, Jay-Z released The Blueprint, an album that would go on to cement his legacy as a generational figure within hip-hop. The album exhibited a then 31-year-old Jay’s penchant for inventive wordplay and swaggering, easygoing street-level
poetics. On one track in particular, he also found him rapping alongside another figure whose own iconic rap career was only just heating up.
“Renegade,” featuring Eminem, provided a moment where two rappers, both operating at their respective peaks, existed side-by-side on the same track. By then, Eminem had established himself with a string of electric, critically acclaimed LPs, while Jay was flying high, entering his bona fide mogul era as the undisputed greatest rapper alive. To this day, however, the song sits at the center of one of hip-hop’s longest-running debates: Did Jay-Z in fact get outrapped by Eminem?
The answer depends on who you ask.
By 2001, Jay had released Reasonable Doubt and Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, successfully laying the groundwork for his mid-aughts run as rap’s premier hustler, able to make ground-level street anthems and crossover hits with an effortless cool. Tracks like “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” and “Big Pimpin’” showed a degree of versatility that made Jay a natural figurehead for a genre now entering the mainstream. Where the so-called “shiny suit” era trafficked in a kind of glittery maximalism, Jay managed to straddle the line between the increasingly pop-minded sensibility of big-budget rap and the ground-level ethos of his native Brooklyn.
Eminem, meanwhile, was becoming another commercial juggernaut in the rap world thanks to his own version of iconoclastic authenticity. Coming off the success of the now-classic The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem similarly rejected the commercial instincts of his peers, leaning into brash, controversial lyrics that inspired everything from protests to boycotts.
“Renegade” was itself a sort of happy accident. Eminem originally recorded the track with Royce da 5’9” as part of their short-lived duo, Bad Meets Evil. When Jay-Z was putting together The Blueprint, he approached Eminem about a collaboration, and he responded with the track, which had at that point been cut from his project with Royce.
The end result was an historic collision of styles. Where Jay approached the track with the cool and controlled energy of a burgeoning mogul, Eminem attacked the beat with the intensity that had made him a superstar, weaving together complex rhyme schemes and dense internal patterns with the energy of a heavyweight boxer. As a finished product, it’s almost like a perfect yin and yang pairing, two poles of rap’s creative instincts, joining together as one.
The song’s lore might’ve ended at the track being a standout on Jay’s album were it not for Jay’s now infamous row with Nas, a rap beef etched in the history books. A few months after the release of The Blueprint, Nas dropped the diss track “Ether,” second perhaps only to “Not Like Us” as the most devastating diss track in rap history. On the song, Nas cleverly injects a narrative into the discourse. “Eminem murdered you on your own shit,” he raps.
In celebrating Eminem’s triumphant verse, was able to muddy the conversation around the track forever. For his part, Eminem does indeed deliver on “Renegade.” His technical ability, turning syllables and consonants into his own playthings, untethered by mortal limitations like the amount of oxygen it might take to run through it all in one go.
“Now who’s the king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics?” Em raps, like a menacing Dr. Seuss. “Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics/Usin’ his music to steer it, sharin’ his views and his merits?”
Here, he’s lucid and almost tauntingly proficient at undressing the public scrutiny surrounding his music. Even by the standards of his early-2000s run, it remains among his sharpest performances to date. Jay’s verses are similarly reflective, though a bit more emotionally grounded. Rather than dazzling listeners with lyrical acrobatics, he offers a nuanced meditation on fame, media scrutiny, and public perception. Even so, there’s a technical brilliance in his directness. “Do not step to me/ I’m awkward, I box lefty,” he raps. “An orphan, my pops left me.”
Which is why the debate around the song remains so tantalizing for fans. “Renegade” isn’t memorable because one rapper demolished the other, but because it meaningfully captures two different visions of rap excellence on the same record. Eminem sounds like a virtuoso technician. Jay-Z sounds like a statesman in the making. The tension between those approaches is what gives the song its lasting power.
The greatest rap collaborations usually reveal something about the artists involved. “Renegade” provided a rare moment that revealed something about the future of the genre itself. It demonstrated a truth that remains relevant in rap discussions a quarter century later: Technical skill and artistic impact are not always the same thing.
