Nearly 30 years after Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett first dreamed up Gorillaz in their shared London flat, what was once a savvy satire of pop superficiality has become a genuine celebration
of all the ways that music can bring us together. Last night at Madison Square Garden, Gorillaz threw the kind of party that only they can — full of dazzling hooks, eye-popping visuals, and A-list guests from across genres, including Black Thought, Little Simz, Pusha T, Miho Hatori, Del the Funky Homosapien, Asha Puthli, Posdnuous, Kara Jackson, the Harlem Gospel Choir, and more. The house was packed with fans of all ages, some in colorful costumes, others in vintage tees, and the merch kiosks selling new images of 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel did brisk business all night long. Inside the arena, the music was joyful and abundant. Songs from The Mountain, the highly danceable album about grief that Gorillaz released earlier this year, got equally ecstatic reactions to old favorites like “19-2000” and “Clint Eastwood.” Here are our best photos from an unforgettable night in New York.
